Flow: The Primary Attribute of Health-First Fitness

Australian CST Coach Donna Eddy demonstrates her “Slide-Thru” flow. Spending an extra week in Bellingham, Washington after CST Omicron, she received an incredible amount of additional training intensives, but she also shared why she has become Australia’s first CST Coach…

And here is an example of how two CST Instructors, John Wolf and Jim Romig, slowly erode the resistance of onlookers and transform prospectives into clients… just by training themselves everyday:

 

The strength and conditioning world in most cases totally neglects performance in favor of the “bigger, faster, stronger” mentality. But human performance, whether athletic or personal excellence, requires mastery of the basic coordinative abilities, which are according to Jozef Drabik (Children & Sports Training):

  • Balance: Maintenance of the center gravity over the base of support, it is both a static and a dynamic quality - which refers to movement sense of mechanoreception.

  • Kinesthetic Differentiation: Ability to feel tension to in movement to achieve the desired movement - which refers to the force/tension sense of mechanoreception.

  • Spatial Orientation: The control of the body in space - which refers to position sense of mechanoreception.

  • Reaction to Signals: The ability to respond quickly auditory, visual and kinesthetic cues - also known as Reaction Time.

  • Sense of Rhythm: The ability to match movement to time - also known as Timing Precision.

  • Synchronization of Movements in Time: Unrelated limb movements done in a synchronized manner - also known as Essential Synergy.

  • Movement Adequacy: Ability to choose movements appropriate to the task - as it relates to Hick’s Law.

Spontaneity has all but been bred out of modern physical culture… which has become a collection of robotic, monotonous repetition of “working out.” The new renaissance of human movement potential - seen in disciplines such as Circular Strength Training, Parkour, Flow Yoga, MMA B-Boy, X-Games, etc - is breaking us free of these degenerative motoric habits, and returning our focus to the coordinative abilities.

As you can see from the video, RMAX International isn’t a company surrounding a one-trick pony.   3. Good points Coach! Donna is an inspiration for my own Body Flow practice.
    Yes, freedom to move is the goal - CST, Parkour, Dance etc . Why is monotonous repetition of “working out” so popular? Because complex movement and getting the Flow is much more demanding to learn at first. It needs patience, self awareness, cleaning the slate, handling frustrations etc. While working your a** off with weight machines that imprison you in restricted movement or doing incredibly boring aerobic routines you can live with the illusion of “being fit” or “strong”.

    There was a similar discussion on Adam Steers blog yesterday.

    It is about dance, flow, mastering the basics, wrong expectations in fitness training and about another system of “intelligent movement” from Swiss MD and Aikido-Master Dr. Christian Larsen and his co-researchers: Spiraldynamik (R).
    It helps me tremendously in understanding and improving coordination and rehab my injuries and finding my spots of bound flow. Doing some Spiraldynamic motor pattern correction after Intu-Flow in the morning is a good preparation for training movement and teaching movement. I showed my Spiraldynamik-physiotherapist your video doing a joint mobiity routine outdoors. She was impressed. Yes, the infinities (and most important spiral movement) are also present in Spiraldynamik. It fits well with CST.
