View Full Version : Quiet-er As A Protocol

Inspired by Cilian's similarly-named post in this forum I want to share an idea that I've toyed with for the past few months. I would have posted there but that thread was taking an interesting turn in thought and I didn't want to interupt.

So then, I was walking around a factory at which I used to be employed with my common-to-the-industrial-field disposable ear plugs in when a strange thing happened, the bell rang for lunch and slowly the machinery began to quiet down as work stopped. I continued walking without removing the ear plugs and as everything got quiet I realized I could hear my joints (mainly my hips) sliding over and around one another as I did the work of walking.

From there I remembered hearing from those present when it happened that when my ankle broke (years ago) it could be heard across the room like someone busting a large dry branch over their knee, but to me it sounded like loud rice-crispies.

So I figured that the ear plugs were blocking out the noise of the external environment so that the vibrations of my joints working (the sounds of my internal environment) could be heard stimulating the small bones of my inner ear. Innitially, I was surprised by how much noise could be heard and so I began to alter my walking gait to find the smoothes path for all things to take. Then the real fun started.

I took my ear plugs home and put them in while doing my Daily Range of Motion. I was not prepared for all the sounds I was about to hear. But what I did find is that the joints that were making the most noise where usually the ones that needed the most attention.

So as a fun training aid to keep my in-check I still occasionally close out the external environment to focus on the internal while doing the work of maintaining the internal.

Isolating the parts to tie things back together more efficiently,

You may be better off just to play this one by ear. :D

This is really piercing the viel of sensory deprivation.
