It strikes me that one benefit of the old system - which did not have a chatroom - was that all the little "back and forth" bits of conversations that can now occur more meaningfully in the chatroom used to be held in public view, as posts.
Some of these conversations have brought up issues and answers for me that I might not have come to otherwise.
Now, the "drawback" mentioned above is also a plus, because it will ultimately make for "cleaner" threads.
But my suggestion is this: if something that seems useful or informative occurs in the chatroom (and if the participants agree to it) it could still be copied to the forums as a thread. This way, the meat won't be lost to everyone.
