IOW, running barefoot...
Goals:
Run barefoot
Improve foot health
Eliminate shin splints
Build endurance
Software:
Sonnon's "Slavyankskiy Byeg" video
"Explosive Running" by Michael Yessis.
030929:
Today's focus:
1. Pre-workout: Active stretches after warm up, prior to running
2. Initiation of movement: start with hip and allow the energy to go down the leg in a wave.
3. Landing: land mid-foot first, then heel
4. Push off: allow the foot to roll forward from full contact to push off the ball of the foot -- instead of just pulling the foot off the ground -- thus giving greater articulation of the whole foot to complete the "wave"
2/3 of the run was in old yucky runnig shoes (UGS on the way)
1/3 was barefoot
[As an aside, there is a yoga practice for the eyes that involves walking barefoot on dew-covered grass. I have always felt that this practice benefits the eyes from a reflexology standpoint.]
Assessment:
During first few minutes of running slight pain in right knee proximally (happens while cycling too).
Legs feel a little tired, like they got a very good workout.
Running was gentle, no trouble with breathing at all.
Absolutely no sign of shin splints or any pain.
I feel great.
Plan:
Indo board and duraball balance this afternoon; Run again on Wednesday am.
