View Full Version : Need Advice on Taku's HIIT program

To start rebuilding my GPP, I adopted Taku's HIIT program after I saw it on Scrapper's web site.

I use an elliptical trainer with arm attachments, and at first I could hardly do half the program with the resistance dialed down to nothing. After a few sessions I could complete the whole thing, and I started counting the weeks.

I am now in my second week of the program, and I have already bumped up the resistance a bit. In the Work cycles, I am averaging 2.8-3.0 mph, and in my Recovery cycles I am averaging 1.8-2.0 mph. I would say the RPE is 8-9, and it only takes about 2 minutes for my legs to stop shaking as I walk it off prior to my cooldown joint mobility routine.

To challenge myself a bit further, would it be wiser to bump up the resistance and try to maintain the speed, or should I just try to go faster in my Work cycles?

I think that the best thing to do would be to post this for the man himself over on http://www.mma.tv/tuf/ if you haven't already done so.

That said, based on my own experience with this excellent program, I would say ditch the strider, find a park and do some sprints. I think you will find that you are able to more closely attend to the RPEs

Not a bad suggestion... but I'm in Minnesota, and it's January.

I'll stick to the elliptical trainer for now. :)

Hi, Jason. That might depend on what your overall priority is. If you value pure speed, then increase the speed, ie, you are training for running, or for an activity such as stickfighting or tennis where raw foot speed is important. However, if your preferred activities involve more power (force with speed), ie, football, grappling takedowns, you might profit more from increasing the resistance. If you are uncertain, then perhaps one workout could focus on footspeed, or turnover, the next could focus a little more on power

just a thougth

I took the question to Scrapper, who moderates this forum and also runs www.trainforstrength.com

He says I should just keep the resistance low and work for speed, the goal being to cover just as much distance in the shorter work cycles to come in Weeks 3 & 4 of the routine as I do now with the longer cycles.

It won't be easy, but what's life without a little (or big) challenge?

Remember that you're using Taku's Intervals to develop your GPP. If you're thinking about increasing the speed of your footwork, hand-eye coordination, etc, I'd seriously consider adding some jump rope drills to your training routines.

Let me know if you need any suggestions.

Hi Scrapper,

Not sure whether JasonE would like them but I would be interstedto see what you suggest in relation to Jump Rope for footwork etc.

I would also welcome your opinion (or anyone elses) on the pros/cons of using wrist weights while doing rope work.

All the best.

Scrapper-

Thanks for the suggestions; I have incorporated them into my HIIT protocol.

I'd like to know what you suggest for jumprope work, as I have a few ropes to work with but have never spent much time with them. LOL! I even have one of those super-heavy rubber jumpropes from a decade ago...

Give me the pain, but don't burn me so bad I won't have the juice to work with my new ClubBells!
