View Full Version : Any thoughts on Lucky 13?

Tribe,

I decided to order Tony Cecchine's Lucky 13 video today in hopes of being able to train in Catch Wrestling in the future. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Also, I am going to put in an order for 2 10lb clubs tomorrow. I look forward to the fun :D .

Thanks Coach, Do you think this kind of training goes along well with CST type training? Or should I cycle between the two?

I'm not certain what you mean by "with CST type training." If you're training for Catch-Wrestling, then talk to Tony and see what he tells you that you should do. (He uses Clubbells himself.)

Hmmmm, let's see if I can interject without totally stuffing both my feet in my mouth :? . I'm guessing, but I believe that MMArtist84 was asking was how to combine the conditioning work shown in "Lucky 13" with the clubwork that you demonstrate in your CST book and video--with the teleological thrust being improvd physical conditioning for grappling. Certainly, Tony may have HIS ideas about how to use YOUR tools--but I think MMArtist84 wants your input on this melding of methods first.

I apologize sincerely if I am either misrepresenting the original question or interfering where I'm not wanted...Clubs and Lucky 13 are both methods I am not familiar with, but am also interested in experimenting with.

I assess personal training deficits based upon a diagram I created: the Performance Diagnostic Trinity. When a client approaches me with a performance issue, I look deficits in one of the three:

I presume that I understood Tim's post. My position still remains the same. I don't know what Tony's Lucky 13 comprises and how he integrates it with Catch. Catch has a heavy competitive basis (facing fully resistant opponents). I also know Tony is a highly skilled technician and teaches with great precision. Lucky 13 is his conditioning program which accompanies his system, so it would appear that Tony's approach satisfies the Performance Diagnostic Trinity. If a coach has a conditioning program interwoven with competition and skill development, it may be a system which "ain't broke." That's why I told him to talk with Tony first before getting involved with CST.

Makena- Thanks for cleaning up my question, that is what I was trying to say. I'm just coming off a long christmas break so I will be a little more articulate in no time :D .
Coach- I do understand what you are saying about Luck 13 being somewhat sport specific and that "if it ain't broke dont fix it". I think that my best bet will be to wait for my clubs and the video to come in and start out working on each one one at a time for starters. Since right now I do not train in Catch Wrestling I guess I can put everything together to suit my own needs as a grappler. Like Bruce Lee says, absorbe what is useful and reject what is not.

Sorry if I am just rambling now, thanks for your help though. The Tribe is a great thing.

Tim,

Sorry. From your initial post, I was under the impression that you would be training in Catch in the near-term. My experience training in Catch with Coach Billy Robinson was absolutely grueling beginning with a 500 Hindu squat warm-up before each 3 hour session. Catch is EXTREMELY inherently athletic... so with Lucky13 I thought it best for you to consult with Tony before adding in any other work. If you're not going to be training in Catch, then it's no problem incorporating Lucky13 into your CST program.

What are your specific goals, and what are your current physical activities?

No need for apologies, you answered the question I asked. I just didn’t ask what I meant to say. But about my goals and activities- I'm 19 and weigh in at 155 at 5'10. Basically I want to become a better grappler, I train between 3-4 days a week for about 2 hours at a time. I feel that my conditioning is adequate for the level I'm at (not competing yet) but I think my primary goal is to increase my GPP and SPP without losing any of my conditioning. I'm Just looking to get stronger.

All the questions about Sambo and Catch Wrestling are just because I am looking to add some variety to my BJJ game and improve my takedowns.

If currently in BJJ, practice Body-Flow 4X/wk. Set the protocol on continuous movement, relaxation and flow. Alternate Lucky13 and Clubbell Training every other work session. With both set the protocol the same: craft your training session with a burst-recover-burst program.

That's a great story, Scott, and it gives me more dimension to--and understanding of--your background. All things being equal, I bet you are glad you made the choices you did, no?

One question--what is "chain wrestling"? Is this soft-work wrestling, or simply wrestling to chain together submissions, or am I missing it altogether?

Finally, I apologize if I was trying to explain something you already understood.

Yeah, the chain wrestling concept he taught me was probably the most valuable lesson out of the trip from a technical perspective. It helped me 'recognize' and understand Soft-Work in Russia (since by heart I'll always be a grappler first), when I first started training there.

I don't begrudge ANY of my experiences now. I wouldn't change a thing... now, because I'm exactly where I want to be right now, and on the path where I intend to go, but back then? No, back then I had all kinds of preconceived ideas and notions about success.

All in all it was good humble pie, and put a fire under my ass to work hard on my own merit to keep fighting internationally quality competitors and studying with quality coaches, no matter what the cost or distance.
