I am looking to incorporate ABC into my workout but I don't think that I am quite ready for the 45 lb big boy. I am thinking about buying a 25 lb CB to use with the ABC until I am ready for the real Bruiser. Is this a completely off the mark idea or should I go forward with this plan?
Thanks

There's nothing wrong with using the ABC 2-handed approach to ANY Clubbell class.

I guess that means I will be putting in my order on payday. I can't wait.

Nemiah ,

As Coach Sonnon says, any size that is challenging will do. For the longest time I was unable to do the GPP with 15s. After Coach Szolek came out with his ABCs, I started using the 20 and sometimes the 25. Almost overnight, my GPP numbers started climbing and in just a few short weeks I was able to use the lighter pair (15s) to accomplish the GPP numbers. So using the big guys (to me that's anything over 15) really helped me enormously.

And a most important factor, using a single heavy Clubbell is just a whole lot of fun. Using it with both hands gives you a sort of atavistic confidence that frightens away your 'inner pansy'. :)

Thanks for the encouragement Michael. The only problem is that I am not looking to frighten away my "inner pansy". I am however looking to strangle him.

Nemiah,

I have loads of fun working up to or down from the 25lb Clubbell in many of the ABC training workouts that I do. Being a Karateka, I often train lifting a 10lb Clubbell with both hands directly over my head into back position and forcefully bringing it forward to point straight ahead. I usually work up to my 25lb Clubbell in a pyramid type fashion (10reps/10lb, 7reps/15lb, 5reps/20lb and finally 3reps/25lb and when I'm feeling frisky I work in the opposite direction). I NEVER try and point my clubbell above 15lbs...I also switch to a slower grinding motion 20lbs and up.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas on how to not only enjoy using the heavier 'bells in ABC training but also how you can incorporate your lighter Clubbells as well!

Enjoy!

One more thing, be sure to incorporate the "Ty Cobb" grip if needed when moving up to the heavier Clubbells!

I bought ABC with the Bruiser Clubbell. It was quite daunting though because it was the FIRST clubbell I had ever lifted, but so far I seem to be progressing well with it. In hindsight I wish I had gotten a 25er so I could do higher rep stuff, but I'm still very pleased with the big boy!

I'd like to set a good example for all the little guys out there that the bruiser is great for anyone.

Nemiah,

You Said,

This should be easy with your new found grip strength from the clubbell!

That's an understatement.

In just my first few weeks of working with my first clubbell (a mere 10lb), I have noticed a striking increase in both grip/ forearm strength and shoulder stability. The increase in shoulder stablility has proved invaluable when performing grinding exercises with a kettlebell.
I can't wait to see the benefits of integrating ABC into my training.

I am going to start with the 25 instead of the 45. I'm sure the 25 will be enough to smoke me. I can't wait.

Congratulations on your progress! The Heavy Class Clubbell is beautiful agony!

Have you noticed any postural changes. I find I'm not slouching that much since starting ABC.

I absolutely have noticed a postural change. It seems that instead of needing to remind myself to keep my shoulders back, it just happens automatically. And just as important is the fact that it feels natural and not a forced position.

Exactly! I love the fact that I no longer walk like a bulldog!

I have never really had a problem with my standing or walking posture (damn that Army), it has always been my sitting posture that was lacking. My lower back has been stiff on occasion for the last few years, but since I started training with the Clubbells (and this may have something to do with the improved posture) the problem has lessened dramatically. And I sleep like a log to boot! :D

Actually I noticed that I was sleeping a lot better the other day!

My pitt, Dozer is wondering why I'm looking at him and laughing right now. Thanks for the funny visual Mike.

LOL! It was worse last year when I was around 200 lbs. I took my dog (Siberian Husky) to the pet store to get him some food and this woman with a bulldog comes over and says "You should get a dog like this because you walk just like him!"

On my way home I kept looking at my reflection in store mirrors trying to see what she meant and I noticed that I really slouched a lot and I didn't really move my arms that much either. Combine that with my stocky build and super thick neck and you've got the first chinese/irish/canadian/two legged BULLDOG!!
