I just heard a public radio interview with Dr. Bruce Ames today. Dr. Ames is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of California, Berkeley, and a Senior Scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI). I did not hear why he was being interviewed, but I thought the information he shared was very relevant, and should be available to the tribe. Of particular interest is his research.

See the "Micronutrients and DNA damage" section.

He has been doing a number of interesting studies dealing with micro nutrients and aging. His main work emphasizes disease prevention. I believe this information to be very relevant to the tribe, since diet is so important. He said empty calories are doing (America) us in.

He explained that mitochondria produce pounds of ATP daily to keep us going. these organelles require micronutrients to do their jobs. More importantly a deficiency in some nutrients causes the same damage to DNA that radiation and harmful chemicals do.

For people who asked for a good source on supplement information, Bruce recommends Eat Drink and be healthy, by Walt Willet.

Bruce Ames (via his research) got me on the Actetyl-L Carnitine and R-Lipoic Acid binges that I go on when I can afford to. He figures the combination protects, feeds and heals (these are not his terms) the mitochondria. I can honestly say it does something, though I must add that I cannot prove there isn't a psychological component...

I think he's an amazing man. He seems to be very compassionate on top of everything else.
