Dr. Mike Eades has an explanation of how the OTC fat blocker Orlistat works, in his blog. His clinic was part of the trials for the drug.
My favorite is the slang picked up by the test people: what they called the icky discharge side effect: "cosmic pizza grease." A phrase that took off.
Anyway, I liked the blog entry for how it explains what's going on with this fat blocker in terms of nutrient absorption. It ends up enforcing a low-fat diet, which had bad side effects for some people on top of what is listed as side effects for the pill. Things like depression and gall bladder problems - both from the disruption of normal fat metabolism.
