View Full Version : Rice, Oat , or Almond Milk?

So I have decided to give dairy-free a shot. Although I do not consume a lot of dairy, usually a couple of oz. of cheese a week on sandwiches or crackers, and 6-8 oz. of milk on my cereal every other day, I still want to see what effect dairy-free would have on me.
What is the general consensus (based on texture, flavor, cost, etc.) on which is better, Rice, Oat, or Almond milk?
I am really just looking for a replacement to put on my cereal, as I have already been cheese free :D for about a week now.
Also, as this is just an experiment, any idea how long should I expect before I notice any changes in Bio-chemistry/well-being? Should I give it a week, month, six months or longer?
P.S Oops I forgot to add that I do put a little cream or 2% milk in my occasional cup of decaf coffee. But even the coffee is getting rarer by the week.

I like almond milk or soy milk. I don't know your specific metabolic needs are, but I think almond milk is a safe bet in taste and texture. Personally, I just added dairy back to my diet.

Coach Tran,
Can I ask why you added dairy back to your diet?
I understand that every body is different and that not everyone can or will benefit from being dairy-free. I am just curious what changes you noticed that lead you to the decision that dairy-free was not for you.
Thanks,
Coach Tran

Sure, bro. First I only drink grass fed and naturally raised milk. I am doing it to increase quality cals into my diet. I have no adverse effects to grass fed milk. This is my solution to the body builder's unhealthy weight gain powders. I want to gain weight the healthy way without sugars and the junk. So I only eat three times a day and with my meals I alternate drinking wholesome, organic, grass fed milk.

Is the tapeworm no longer satisfied with the 72 oz. steaks?? :D
Seriously though, thanks for the reply. You must be doing a hell of a lot of work to need even MORE calories.

Rice milk is the most milk-like in taste and texture. If you're replacing milk with something in a recipe, premade rice milk almost always works.
Almond milk is, in my opinion, more tasty (not to mention a bit more nutritionally interesting).
I dislike the sweetness of soy and oat milk, but I may be biased - soy produces a lot of the same issues for me as dairy.

I know i'm a big fan of the almond milk myself. No "side-effects" for me like with dairy, and the taste is good enough that I can go with the unsweetened variety. It's win - win.

Ive been using Almond milk for 2 weeks now, and no complaints.
as for the cereal, ive been off the grains so no cereal, opting for cooked breakfasts. so the need for milk is reduced. I have a class of fresh almond milk after the breakfast as some extra fiber . :)

D,
You wrote to me that you were a mixed type. As a mixed metabolic type, Ezekiel 4:9 Sprounted whole grain cereal (Almonds) is an excellent choice. Not all cereals are the same. If you are protein type, stay away from the grains...

Damien,
I prefer the cooked breakfasts also. But I do crave variety and can't eat eggs and sausage/bacon every day. So I usually rotate every other day between eggs, and cereal. (On a side note, I have found that my body no longer tolerates oatmeal very well, so I am kind of stuck with the mixed grain cereals.)
And I would second Coach Tran's suggestion, Eziekiel 4:9 cereal is excellent, in taste, texture, and quality. If you can get your hands on some, it is definitely worth it.
Looks like Almond milk is the winner. Unfortunately, the only place available locally to get some is a very small health food store and it is rather expensive. But I'll bite the bullet for a while and see how it goes.

Coach Tran,
What resource would you recommend for determining one's metabolic type?

Yes this is true Brian. Variety is essential.. :) and even though ive been having cooked breakfasts everyday, they have been more like dinners then traditional Breakfasts. My favorite ATM is Pan fried organic chicken with stir-fried Veg, however yesterday i had organic Lamb steak with roasted bell pepper, chili, spinach, mushroom and onion. But as for cereal, im not a big fan anyway and was happy to drop any chance i had.. heh heh :)
As for the metabolic typing, Not sure what Coach Tran used, but i did the PAID (US$59.95)test on the Dr Mercola website (http://www.mercola.com/metabolic_typing.htm). which gives you basic food info and some other info for your metabolic type.

Sorry to flood this thread. Brian, that test is also in the book
"the metabolic typing diet" by William Wolcott & Trish Fahey
Which can be found here at amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Metabolic-Typing-Diet-Customize-Chemistry/dp/0767905644/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-4588930-0393627?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174043042&sr=8-1), Ive just started reading it now. I found it mentioned on this forum. (cant remember where though)

Coach Tran,
Thanks for the links. Looks like I am a mixed type. I guess this is good huh? Seems like I am not really limited to the types of food I can/should eat.

Brian,
It takes many honest and strict food logging and many metabolic assessments to actually know your metabolic type. Don't let one assessment determined your type. Just like many newbies have problems understanding CST intuitive training, I have found many people find it hard answering metabolic type questions. As with all skill, let scientific reasoning, practical experience, and intuition guide your way. Please do get the Metabolic Type Diet book because it is an excellent reference.

Careful quitting dairy if it is only an experiment. I quit dairy for about 6 months to find out that I could no longer digest it very well. There is a specific sugar in milk called lactose. You're born able to digest it using an enzyme called lactase. Some people stop making this enzyme as an adult (regardless of consumption) and become "lactose intolerant". Some, like me, go off of dairy and end up with a very reduced or non existant ability to digest most dairy. I also realized that 2% milk no longer tasted the same to me after being off of dairy.
I use soy milk due to its availability and consistancy. The rice milk I've tried is watery, and other options are scarce and expensive. Watch out for 8th Continent though as it has the most artificial stuff in it. Silk has a totally unsweetened version for those wishing to avoid sugar. You guys have me interested in at least trying the almond milk now though.
If you go back to dairy, I hope you have better luck than I did.

I prefer rice milk over almond. I also like oat milk, hazelnut milk, and I recently tried some hemp seed milk which was pretty good. As for almond, I've tried 2 different brands. One I liked. I recently bought some of another brand because of a good sale but it's nasty. Soy milk is okay but I prefer the other options when available.
