I've been training some beginner-level athletes to run their first 5k race this coming weekend. They basically said, "We need help; we'll learn anything you can teach us." Of course, I've been teaching them CST. ;)

Our training has primarily centered on Intu-Flow, FlowFit, and running. They are doing GREAT, and will easily complete the run well under their goal time. I am particularly impressed with how well FlowFit practice has enhanced their overall conditioning for running, especially their breath discipline.

While training these athletes, I felt a desire to explore the possibilities for myself. A little over 10 years ago, I was running 3-4 days per week, but had never run more than 5 miles in training. Now it had been years since I'd run more than 2-3 miles nonstop. Following the CST maxim of leading from the front, I decided to enter the 10k division of the same race as my clients, and adjusted my training program accordingly.

The 10k race is just under 7 miles in length. Today, for fun, I did a 1 mile run, then later went for a longer run of (I thought) about 7 miles. I'd never run that route before, and well before the halfway mark, I was thinking, "This seems longer than I expected..."

Afterwards, I drove my car along the route and was surprised to find that I'd run 10 miles (roughly 16k) nonstop, without aerobic fatigue or serious discomfort. This is by far the longest run I've done to date, and I am pleased with how well my body held up. The actual race will be easy by comparison!

I may never be a serious competitive runner, but this experience has helped me to rediscover an enjoyment in running that I haven't had in a LONG time. Despite a knee that has had multiple injuries and a surgery, hips that have suffered muscle tears and strains, a low back that haunted me with chronic pain for 9 years... CST practice has enabled me to set a new PR and confidently expect to beat it in short order.

The race was this morning. I ran the "Get In Gear" 10k in Minneapolis, MN. It was a fun course with some hills, bridges, and plenty of turns. My partner Erik helped motivate me during the first half of the race when people were passing us. As he started struggling during the last two miles, I returned the favor and helped him keep going.

We wanted to finish the race in an hour or less, but at the halfway point we were behind. As the miles rolled on, we regained but it seemed we'd have to settle for an hour and five minutes.

About the six mile mark, Erik was overcome by a coughing fit and had to stop briefly. He told me to continue, and I pushed to see how much more time I could make up. I finished the race at a dead run, with an official completion time of 1:01:43. Though it wasn't quite what I'd hoped for, I am happy to have completed the race averaging less than 10 minutes per mile, a new PR for distances greater than 5 miles.

At no time did I feel limited by my aerobic capacity. In retrospect, I could have made my goal time if I'd hit the afterburners sooner. The official time sheets showed that the winner completed the course in just under 30 minutes, so I won't worry about trying to finish in the top ten for a while. The next 10k I run, my goal is to cut 5-10 minutes off my time. For this race I only ran distances about twice weekly, with very short distances and Prasara comprising the bulk of my aerobic training. I also have the RMAX Powered Running DVD which helped me improve my gaiting. With this one out of the way, I have learned some important lessons and established a benchmark. Prepping for the next one will be much easier.

Hi Jason,
Great job on the race! It is going to be pretty cool to see where your new training focus will take you. I think I will live vicariously through you on this one...I wont be running any 10K's soon :).
