Hi everybody,
I recently started doing clubbell swings and really like the feel in my shoulders. I want to get into more routines bit I have a small problem.
I live in Taiwan and can't get clubbells shipped here.

I am currently using sledgehammers to do the swings with. In December, I'm travelling to Canada to visit my sister. I will have a set of clubbells shipped there and carry them back on the plane.

Here is my problem, what size should I buy? I won't be able to get another set for four or five years. Can I train with the hammers using a longer grip? I would like to buy the 20's or even the 25's, but I don't want to buy clubbells so heavy I can't train.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Thank you,
James Linn
ps
Will you ever ship overseas Coach?

James, what kind of strength conditioning do you currently do at what weight and set/rep scheme? I need to understand your strength training history to advise you on weight class to begin.

We are however on the verge of international sales. Contact the manufacturer at www.torqueathletic.com to see if they've enacted the international ordering already. If not, contact Tom Grow who may be able to help with international orders (I'll call his attention to your post.)

If you send me an email at tom@kettlebell.com, I can help you. Emaill me your postal code, city, and the clubbell(s) you want. While it gets costly to send clubbells overseas, I can do so at a nice discount and pass the savings on to you. I can ship to most places in the world.

Hi Coach,
I train daily, starting in the morning with 200 hindu squats [on the road to 500] 50 or so hindu pushups, then 30 minutes of Bodyflow.

I follow that with 10 sets of 5, hammer swings [swipes] and as many mills
as I can bear.

Finish off with some GPP exercise with my son. Steve Maxwell's Burpee is a killer folks.

In the afternoon, I currently alternate sandbag training and dumbell snatches. I can snatch a 30 kilo dumbell 3 times with good form.
Strict press once.

I am actually a lot stronger since practicing BodyFlow. Funny That :D

Thanks in advance for all your help,
James Linn

James, I was using sledgehammers leading up to the release of Clubbells so I have an idea of what you're experiencing. How heavy are the sledge hammers that you're swinging. This info could help me to suggest a Clubbell that you could handle and be continually challenged by.

sincerely, Coach Szolek

P.S. here's a link to an old article (amazing to see how far I've come in a year) of mine talking about my sledgehammer work and why I made the switch, etc.

Hi Coach Szolek,
Can I just call you Coach Bruiser or Coach Monster?
Thanks for the reply, my hammers are 10 pounders and I grip the handle
about 18 inches from the head.

I absolutely want clubbells. The hammers are great but I'll bet the distributed weight of the Clubbells is really nice.
Thank you for your time,
James Linn

Hi Jay,
50 times!!!!!! Wow, I'll bet you were sore.

I love snatches too. I used to train for size and muscularity only

When I found strength training, it really excited me. I love explosive
training the most. Snatches, clean and press, kettlebell lifts [although I have to use dumbells for those]

50 times ouch!!
Than you for the reply,
James

James, thank you for the kind words.

If your using 10lbs. sledgehammers then I'd suggest a pair of Welter Class (15lbs.) Clubbells.

I was using a pair of 12lbs. hammers with the handles cut down to 25" and the jump to the Welter Class Clubbells was still quite a load to handle. (And still is)

It sounds like you've got high hops for where you want to take your Clubbell training and that is commendable, but remember, the heavier Classes of Clubbells will always be around for you but if you jump to them too early you'll end up not getting much use out them or worse, overtraining.

So take you're time and rest assured that the Welter Class Clubbells will provide more than adequate stimulation for years to come.

Best wishes,
Coach Szolek

Coach Szolek,
Thanks for the sound advice. I was actually thinking I should buy the 15's
first too. Start at the beginning. Tom said he could mail the clubbells
to me in Taiwan, so my problem is solved on all levels.

Thank you Coach Szolek and Coach Sonnen for taking the time to answer my questions and help me.

Thanks also to Tom for replying about the mailing situation.
What a great place this is :!:

Hi

I just going to throw my three pence worth in regarding resistance training regardless of what type of resistance training. I’m not yet a practitioner with Clubbells so if this is provocative and sets a string alight, so be it.

One trains with weight to become stronger, right ? Well not always.
Some young ladies just want to be firmer. Some young men just want to have bigger muscles. So they train differently.

People talk about number of repetitions 3,5, 10, 25. What is more relevant then these numbers is the time the muscle is under load. So how you perform your training is also relevant, ie pauses, speed of movement, momentum, lack of momentum.

To become very strong and not put on any size one might train twice a day every day and only do three sets of three or ( 10 seconds under load ) of a very heavy weight. He or she will never really be sore.

To become strong and put on size one might train three times a week and do three sets of 12 or ( 30 seconds under load ) of a heavy weight. He or she will be sore and need a day to recover as by doing this type of training he or she will have damaged muscle fibres that need to repair.

To have enduring strength one might train once every other day and do three sets of 30 or ( 60 seconds under load ) of a medium weight. He or she will be sore and need a day to recover as by doing this type of training he or she may have damaged muscle fibres that need to repair and also may have accumulated some toxins and lactic acid.

To build endurance ( or specific slow twitch fibres ) one might train once every other day and do one sets of ( 2 to 3 minutes under load ) of a lighter weight. He or she will not be sore by doing this type of training he or she may have accumulated some toxins and lactic acid. This training should be followed by an aerobic activity to purge the muscles.

If you are training for a sport or martial art then you should understand what it is you are training for.

Speed Endurance: How would you train for speed endurance ?
What do you do ? How often ? and why ?

I labored under a misunderstanding for three years until I realised I was getting slower !

Gosh Edd,
I haven't a clue  Sorry!

I think if you started a new topic, restating your question you would get a response from one of the Coaches.

This thread was about my question regarding Clubbell weights and that situation has been resolved.

I will buy the 15's.

Thank you for your reply though.

James Linn
