HEy everyone, my name is James . Ive been involved in martial arts and weightlifting for around 20 years now. For quite a while, I was of the bigger is better mentality- I lifted to get big and strong, and cardio was something I avoided because i didnt want to "lose any size." For a period, this training seemed to work great.
Over time, though, problems arose. My joints began to ache. I found out that I got injured rather easily during grappling, and my wind was atrocious. It became obvious that my training did not give me what i wanted, perhaps it was just that my goals changed.
Eventually, I stumbled onto Coach Sonnons materials. To be honest, I wasnt impressed at first. It didnt seem like my bench press would increase from the exercises shown, or that I would gain any more muscle mass.
Eventaully, I went back to the grapplers toolbox , and saw a motion that was a perfect answer for a question I had about a grappling situation. From there, the GT began to make sense. I began to read more of what Coach wrote, and with an open mind I realized I could learn quite a bit from this man.
One huge side effect from my study has been that my coaching ability has dramatically increased. I found myself at the gym spending more time working with some of the fighters , seeing how they limited their own movement, and doing what I could to help them out. It reached a point where even now, when im coming off a muscle tear, the head of the school makes sure i come in to help with the training. If nothing else, what Ive learned from Scott has allowed me a new level of involvement with MMA, even when injuries or health prevent me from participating in the hard training sessions.
Im glad there is an online forum here to facilitate communication and sharing of knowledge!!
