Sometimes when I'm sitting not really doing anything I'll get what feels like a sudden jolt in the chest kind of like a squirt of adrenaline. It makes me sit up a little straighter and my breathing increases and I get a feeling kind of like being startled or like being suddenly woken up from a nap. After a minute it goes away. It only started recently, like a couple of months ago. Does anyone know what this might be?

Thanks

Hey Chris,

This could be any of SO many different things.

One of the keys here (IMO) is that you're sensation is a relatively positive one (albeit unfamiliar and a bit startling). I've seen things like this with clients after many months of mobility training.

It's like like the body is 'resetting' to a more accurate postural position, which has a positive association & feeling and from my experience can come in jolts.

I've understood this to be a combination of the nervous system and emotional systems realigning.

This is just something to use as a possibility. I welcome others to join in.

It could be something as benign as what Coach Fielding posted, or it could be something more serious. There's no way to tell over the internet. You're best bet would be to make an appointment to get it checked out by your doctor. If it's nothing, you'll have bought yourself some peace of mind; if it is something, you'll be happy that you were proactive about it.

Thanks for the replies.

I did get checked not too long ago, not specifically for that but cholesterol, blood pressure and all that are fine. The doctors have never found a reason to worry.

I wonder if it could be stress related? Several years ago I went through about a two week period where I felt like I was high on caffeine. From the time I woke up until the time I went to bed my heart rate would be racing and I'd feel jittery and restless. This feels a little like that but only lasts a few seconds.

I would agree that it's makes good sense to go the extra mile and have it checked out at a deeper medical level. I've not encountered the symptoms you've just described.

Are you doing RESET? Because that program works with lowering the heart rate and sympathetic nervous system activity (fight or flight response), and that may very well help with your issue. Also, when the heart is beating slower, it also beats stronger and I've noticed in myself that this could be a little startling at first.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not doing RESET but the problem kind of went away, I haven't experienced it since I left the original post. I was going through some stress at the time and now that the stress is over the problem seems to have stopped so I think it might have been stress related.

I do hope to give RESET a try, it sounds interesting, but I just bought a couple other things and have to pace myself.
