Hey guys.
A long time ago (1999) I was at the peak of my game in Surf Life Saving. Shortly afterwards, due to complications I gave up the sport (and subsequently any serious training) and focused on simply the volunteer patrol aspect of Surf Life Saving which meant I had to keep a minimum of my fitness.
For a while I've sort of seemed lost and not really knowing what it is I've been looking for (in fact I've pretty much been wandering the streets in a daze and day dreaming on the beach SINCE 1999). Until I moved to Sydney...because I started wandering the streets and the shops in a daze here as well it occurred to me that none of this was engaging my mind at all...it was in fact a mindless activity I had been performing for quite some time.
Since I've been on this forum however something has been lurking in the back of my mind which I couldn't quite place my finger on until the other day when Coach Chomycia recommended I undertake an experiment with my training (on the Strength and Conditioning Forum). I've decided that what I've been missing all this time is the competition. For so long I've told people I don't compete anymore because "...too many people do the minimum patrol hours required to compete and then they don't bother with the real reason Surf Life Saving is here...patrols."
It was only a half truth. Too many competitors do ply this little trick to get out of patrols. But that shouldn't have been a reason for me to give up. I have therefor decided to start comepting in Surf Life Saving Sport once again, BUT, on my terms. I would like to essentially be my own coach. Train myself. But I have to admit I do need help...
The event I would like to compete in is the Open Ironman Event. It consists of a Board Paddle (800m), a run (25 - 75m), a Swim (800m), a run (25 - 75m), a Ski Paddle (800m) and another run (25 - 75m). The order of the Swim, Ski and Board is drawn from a hat before the race starts so it could be in any order on the day. My question is, if you had to train for this event (I would like to make it to State if not National Level), what would you go for? How would you train for such a multi-disciplinary event?
Ny advice would be great! I look forward to hearing from you.
