Hey Coach Jones,

In the absence of anyone to hold the focus mitts, what would you recommend as the next best thing to practice moving around and punching at?

Thanks,

Well, the truth is - it depends.

A heavy bag is a good option but generally people don't have the space to hang one properly. This and not understanding how to correctly work a bag leads to "posing" where folks end up hitting the bag a few times, readjusting or admiring their work and then hitting again. No good.

Generally, I would recommend practicing with shadowboxing and working mechanics until you can get with someone that can hold the pads for you.

I wrote up a post about the proper use and hanging of a heavy bag a while back. Do a search for, I think, "Heavy Bag 101" or some such thing. I think it's still lurking somewhere.

Let me know if you can't find it.
