Joao Cruz In-house Tournament:
The Schwartz family did very well at the end of year tournament. I’m really proud of my girls. Cypress earned her next belt for being in her forth tournament. She rolled with a boy who had another year experience than her. She stayed him of well until he got the sub with an Amercano. Aubrin Ended up rolling with a boy who subbed her with a Kimora. It takes guts just to be present and go with kids more experienced, good job girls.
Dad did well too. This was my second tournament. I showed excellent progress from the first. This last week I focused my training on removing restrictive forces. I did IF and Prasara daily.
I rolled on Monday with a guard game. In my group I had one blue belt, a purple belt and Joao, a black belt. I was the token white belt:) The game is a two minute match with consecutive opponents. I went first and had to defend my guard for eight minutes strait with superior players, then I had to roll again with each of them practicing passing their guard. I was pretty gassed:)
Wednesday I worked with Arie. She came down from Santa Fe for the Dallas Tournament. Incidentally, Arie comes from the Alberto Crane School, small world. Arie was doing some coaching with me on my game plan. We worked on escaping an arm bar and getting position. She had me focus just on getting control of my opponent and getting position. This was my game plan for today, just control my opponent and get position.
First match:
I had a great roll I was able to control the hips fairly well. I made a mistake and gave him an arm. I was able to escape the arm bar. Unfortunately, I escaped and gave him position and was subbed from a chock in guard.
Second match:
Another great roll, this time I was able to dominate the match. I scored ten points and got a knee to belly sub. I got the take down and he pulled into his guard. He went for the arm bar and I escaped back into his guard. I escaped guard into side control and got knee to belly twice. He got me back in half guard and I escaped that back to side control. This time I was surprise that the knee to belly subbed him. The difference was I posted my leg better and drove the knee toward the pelvis, deep fascial traction. Wow, I won against a blue belt.
So I’m elated, I got third in the men’s division. Next week is the Gracie Open and I’m going to keep the same plan. Continue with removing restrictive forces and play a positional game, try not to give away a sub.
