Dear Forum,
Does anyone have experience with coconut oils as a supplement? If so what kind and how is it incorporated? I saw some in the health food store yesterday and was very curious about it. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences.
sincerely,
Will

Hi Will,
I can't say that I have used coconut oil is a supplement, but I have been eating it for 3-4 years. If all the information from the 'experts' is true, then the medium chain fatty acids and antiviral properties are great for you. It is also a great source of those dreaded saturated fats that the world fears. It tastes great on pretty much everthing. You can blend it with eggs and cream for a fat milk shake or douse your meat in coco oil. It is recommended that you eat about 3-4 tablespoons per day by the 'experts'. There are basically two different varieties: the kind that are tasteless and odorless (ex. spectrum) and the kind that smell and taste like coconut (ex. http://www.rawfood.com/cgi-bin/order/index.cgi?id=939142976&d=single&item_id=0459&c=Organic_Food&sc=Coconut_Oil&tc=) The second kind from NFL is amazing, but extemely pricey. If you search the internet for virgin coconut oil you will find some good stuff.

Dr. Mercola has been extolling the benefits of coconut oil for several months, and his spiel has essentially agreed with uprise. Not surprisingly, he also offers a brand. It's not too expensive and tastes surprisingly good - you could spread it on bread and eat it that way if you cared to.

I have been using it for a couple of months. I usually just take a tabespoon after I eat. I eat almost 0 carb right now so I am mainly using it as a fat supplement because i find it difficult to eat enough fat with my protein. And since I am eating almost all cooked animal flesh i thought it would be a good idea to incorporate some raw organic. I started using it after reading Mercola's info.

It is also of benefit to mix your coconut oil with polyunsaturated fats. This is because coconut oil doubles the rate at which your body can formulate DHA from plant EFAs, especially those found in hemp seed, flax seed, and blue-green algaes. Normally the rate would be 3% conversion, and mixing with coconut oil ups it to 6%.
Here's my staple recipe with coconut oil:
One bunch of dark greens, usually kale or dandelion, very finely chopped.
Massage the cut greens with sea or himalayan crystal salt until wilting occurs.
Mix in juice of half lemon and continue massaging.
Mix in 2-4 tablespoons of coconut oil and 1-2 tablespoons hemp seed butter, pumpkin seed butter, or macademia butter. Continue massaging.
The mixture should become very condensed and moist. Mix it into a bag of baby field greens with hemp seeds for a full salad.
Another favourite of mine is to rub down greens with coconut oil, put hemp seeds and dulse inside, and roll it up burrito like. Collards work very well for this. Or try coconut oil and cayenne on crackers.
