View Full Version : Need advice on mixing up the arts a bit

I am currently training twice a week at muay thai which isn't very much but the only other place he teaches is on a bad day for me.

If any of you have read my introduction at the welcome mat you will know I did wado ryu karate for eight years.

I saw an advert in a shop window advertising the same class at the same place I used to go and their was an e-mail address for my old sensei.

So I e-mailed him and we had a good dialouge and he asked if would come back and train with him as he said I used to have a lot potential.

My problem is deciding whether to go back a few times a week.

Do you think it would just confuse me?

I wouldn't be going their for learning how to fight in a cage ort even on the street, just I guess for old times sake and to do more cardio and stretching and improving speed, power and athleticism.

I understand there are better ways you can train in a gym to get the results, but I don't know, something inside of my heart wants to go back. Maybe it's unfinished business or something, who knows, i'm no psychologist.

So yea, stop digging side paths Ed!!

Sorry about that.

Is it a bad idea in you guys opinions?

Thanks

I'm not sure I understanbd what your asking.

What are your training goals overall?

Hi Coach Jones!!

Sorry I was babbling on a bit their.

My goals are to compete in muaythai and eventually teach it.

I want to get stronger, a bit bigger and have more flexibility and endurance.

I spoke to Scrapper yesterday and he told me to lay off the weights for a few weeks and stick with the mod1 which I recieved today.

After listening to the easiest workout on the cd's I figured I would have to leave it for a month until my exams are over or I won't be able to concentrate on my studies.

So, my question is, is it a bad idea to go back to karate a few times a week?

The more I think about it the more I think it's a bad idea.

I asked the guys at sfuk, and they all say it's a bad idea, so i'll probably go once a week for a month or something so I don't offend my old sensei who I stupidly agreed with by e-mail that i'll go back and train hard.

So, thanks anyway!!

Let me play devils advocate here for a minute..

I cant for the life of me figure out why practicing karate would hamper your Muay Thai development. Of course if you could practice Muay Thai also on those nights then it makes sense but it seems to me that you cant.
After all you'll be kicking and punching away just the same. Look at it as a very specific (but not quite the same) workout for Muay Thai. I think people get too caught up on stylistic diference. When the fact is that the more you train to kick and punch the better youll be at it. Sure most karate schools dont have the same enfasis on sportive full contact fighting as Muay Thai schools do but does that really matter? Are you not going to be training/sparing Muay Thai twice a week? Hell you can go as far as expresing your interes in full contact fighting to your Sensei who knows, maybe he'll acomodate, it's not like karatecas are strangers to kickboxing. Their rules might be diferente but not diferent enought for one thing not to translate to the other. All Muay Thai fighters dont fight the same, same gos for karate guys. Dont get caught up in all this traditional MA suck, only BJJ/Muay Thai/Boxing/wrestling are any good crap. I love sport fighting as much as the next guy, but like I said, it's not like you are gonna stop training Muay Thai. Mod one will get you in great shape , but IMO it should be what you do when you dont have anybody to train with or maybe as a morning suplement or something. As long as you have a living breathing oponent to practis MA with take advantage of it. Styles be dammed!!!

OK rant mode off
hope I was of some help

It comes down to a question only you can answer:

What do you REALLY want? :?: :?:

If you are thinking of going back, is it because of simple nostalgia, because of a sense of loyalty, because you want the next rank, because you think it would complement your current training, or because there is something you aren't getting from your current training that you miss and want to regain? :?

I'd go back and try it a time or two and see how it feels. If you decide you might keep going out of some old loyalty... don't. An unwanted obligation to do something that isn't moving you towards your goals becomes a burden, and you will resent it.

On the other hand, you may discover a depth to the training that is lacking in your other practice, which you have been missing. If it motivates you to keep improving and seeking insights into your other training, then I'd keep going until the glow wears off. :D
