Hi all (& thanks for the greeting Coach) i'm originally (sorta) from British Columbia, but I eventually left Canada to travel through SEAsia, and ended up exploring the east coast of Australia. Now I'm up in Lismore finishing a secondary science / teaching degree at Uni.

My primary martial art is Judo, which i'm absolutely loving, it is fantastic. One of my biggest goals for the next few years is to reach ikkyu (brown) rank, so i'll be legal to teach Judo to the kids for sport in highschool. (Personally I would like to learn MMA and the other grappling styles too, and if they're every available i'll do so. One of the drawbacks of a country lifestyle is the scarcity of martial art!)

I've recently bought IOUF, and it is an amazing inspiration & idea-source for my personal practice. It has really revved me up for exploring Coach Sonnen's materials further - the clubbell material is high up on the list. I hope these forums can help me to get a headstart.

best regards,
Charlie L.

ps. my wife & I have two beautiful little babies ... and i have plans for them & their development too. let me share a cool quote:

In the evening I desired the boys to let me see their dexterity in
athletic exercises, such as running, leaping, wrestling, and climbing;
telling them they must keep up the practice of these things, so as to
grow strong, active men, powerful to repel and cope with danger, as
well as agile and swift-footed to escape from it. No man can be really
courageous and self-reliant without an inward consciousness of physical
power and capability.

"I want to see my sons strong, both morally and physically," said I.
"That means. brave to do what is good and right, and to hate evil, and
strong to work, hunt, and provide for themselves and others, and to
fight if necessary."

Charlie,
Welcome to the Tribe! I spent about a week at Southern Cross Uni. Is that where you attend? Lovely area.
Nothing more noble than passing along wisdom to our children...
Thoroughly enjoyed the reference, though if I may add to Wyss' quote - "hating evil" can become a trap in itself.
I look forward to reading your progress, discoveries and insights. Enjoy CST Forums!

Yes exactly, I'm studying at Southern Cross Uni, and live near the bottom of the hill below it. I agree it is a wonderful spot, must be in the top 5 groovy locations in Australia, with beach, sub-trop rainforests, space & swimming holes so close, and so many creative/alternatives types living around here.

So can you say what were you doing here? ROSS for martial artists?Z-health seminars for the sports-science / naturopathy students? Any details, names of groups or people would be greatly appreciated -- i'd really love to try and make contact with experienced people to explore all these things in-the-flesh. Anyway thanks for these forums!

Cheers,
Charlie

Charlie,

Definitely one of the "crunchiest" places I've been to in the world.
I was both touring and conducting a seminar tour in Oz, and the people I met at Southern Cross were students - probably no longer present as this was four years ago already.

I have steady clients in Sydney and Melbourne, though that obviously doesn't help you there.

There are quite a few Aussies here at CST Forums. Throw an open invite in the Open Discussion section. You may get some local bites. I'd really enjoy a return visit to Byron Bay sometime soon.

:-) yeah the hills around here are peppered with communes, mudbrick houses, worm-farms & composting toilets ... entheogen enthusiasts worldwide come to Nimbin's 'Mardi-Grass' festivals ... yogis & bellydancers ... this is the world headquarters for the Permaculture movement ... medicinal herb research & environmental science ... yes, very crunchy indeed!

and hmm, four years ago - ok i think you're well overdue for a return visit! hope to see you at beautiful Byron Bay some day

cheers,
charlie

Hi all,

just refreshing this post, as I haven't been on the forum for awhile, and have just started a training-blog. My details are pretty much all the same as before, but I've moved a couple hours south, to Coffs Harbour, which is a beautiful coastal town. I've earned the brown-belt, and my babies are beautiful little children now.

My new coach at the Judo club here is _exactly_ my size, which is really really good! (Such a welcome relief after having too many huge training partners, which makes everthing very difficult) He absolutely dominates me in standup - tosses me around like a used tissue ... bliss, I've lots to learn from him :-). Luckily for my ego its a bit different on the ground, shall we say <preens> Heh ... other good thing about this town is a tiny BJJ club where the instructor can whup on me down there too, heh.

Ok, well, hello again, thanks for your help, and I'll see you around!
