Hello, my name is Francisco and I am from the Bay Area, California. My first training priority is BJJ with resistance training second. I have been doing BJJ for the last 3 years and have used movements and concepts found in rmax videos and books to improve many aspects of my game.

I use clubbells, kettlebells, BWE, and barbells in my resistance training. Many people gear their resistance training and GPP training to improve their sport performance. I have found the opposite to work the best for me. I believe that the best way to get better at a sport is to do the sport itself and time spent on resistance training or GPP training would be better spent doing your sport. When I started devoting more hours to training BJJ and less time doing resistance training and GPP trianing my mat performance improved tremendously than when I did tons of gpp work and resistance training. I still like to do resistance training so my solution is to keep my resistance training routines as short as possible and do them with the attitude that resistance training only improves resistance training and BJJ only improves BJJ training. I have given up on doing GPP training because I don't like it and I have found the best way to imporve my work capacity for BJJ is to do more rounds of hard sparring.

I have found that joint mobility, BME, especially kinetic chains, and ROSS breathing exercises, improve both my resistance training performance and my BJJ performance. I think this is because they teach your body to be more efficient and they don't fatigue you.

For my resistance training I have been training with my 15's clubbells for about a year now and have seen great improvement in strength and endurance in my arms and forearms. I have recently, after reading this forum, switched my focus to just working on learning and improving the swipe and mill and excluding all other clubbell movement except for ocassional assistance work. I do this because my time is limited due to work and BJJ training. I have also done the same with kettlebell training. I only work on the 1 kb snatch and the 2 kb jerk. Aside from CB and KB lifting I also do HSPU's, Pullups, and Barbell Squats. So in total I have 7 movements that I work on and try to improve.

I am glad to be part of this forum and I enjoy reading other peoples posts and training logs.

Welcome to the Tribe, Francisco! You are quite correct that GPP is over-done in almost all cases with athletes - especially in sports such as BJJ which inherently involve intensive conditioning. GPP is only a supplement to skill training. Read more about this in the current issue of CST Magazine: Three Dimensional Performance Pyramid. Swipes and Mills contribute superb SPP for grappling. I look forward to reading your continued progress.

Hi Francisco,

It's nice to see some local people who have some of the same interests (e.g. BJJ, clubbells). I currently train BJJ at the local Rickson afilliate. Where do you train?

Cheers,
