Dear Forum,
Can anyone share their experiential knowledge of the Frolov breathing device? I have been reading about Performance breathing in the Circular Strength and Body Flow books. Does the Frolov device help develop Performance breathing?
Secondly, I have the Dykhaniye breathing tape, which is excellent. However, it is an encyclopedia of techniques -- which techniques would best serve to help develop Performance breathing?
Lastly, can someone give me a tangible example of how they incorporate Performance breathing into a movement such as a dumbbell or kettlebell swing? From what I have read, it seems down would compress air out and the upswing would take in air.
Any shared information would greatly be appreciated. It will also help determine whether Santa's wish list either gets a new set of Clubbells, the Frolov device with book, or some new tapes possibly Maximology.
Thank you for the Forum's help in advanced and I look forward to learning from your experiences.

Will,
Endogenous Breathing and Performance Breathing are not the same methodology. EB is more involved than Performance Breathing - a complete health system unto itself.
All the exercises in Dykhaniye help to develop the Performance Breathing method.
Performance Breathing is a technique with many nuances, only one of which includes the principle of Compression Exhale - Expansion Inhale. Other principles include Exhale on Effort - Activate Core and Perform Fine Skill on the Control Pause. Do the exercises on Pages 93-95 of the CST book. Examples are provided therein.
Good to see another RKC joining the Tribe. Good luck with your new journey into CST.

Coach Sonnon,
Thank you for your reply. Can you tell me how deep the well goes on EB? Can you give a synopsis of EB?
The Performance breathing I will play with. But what is the philosophy of the EB and how crucial does the Frolov device play in enhancing overall health and possibly performance as well.
It is a pleasure to be part of a tribe that sees strengthening oneself as a path toward helping others!
yours in training,

To explain the bottom of the EB well, one must go there. I haven't, and it's not integral to CST. One can use Dr. Frolov's device to accelerate practice in Performance Breathing, which is what many CSTs have done. Dr. Frolov wrote that his device is a means to an end - in his case Engogenous Breathing. Think of EB as hyperbolized Control Pause.

I tried something very similar once at a Asthma Foundation camp. IIRC they were doing a thing on buteyko and other retraining methods.
D-A-M-N ;)
I'm gonna get me one of those doo dads one day. Not sure if they do anything, but its fun ;-)

All of them ;-)
Kind of vague huh? Tell you what - tell us what your performing and we'll go from there ;-)
Suffice it to say - when compressed, be breathed out. When expanded, be breathed in.
PS: I have an old, old, old article of Scott on this very topic (back in the day when the RMAX forum was yellow text on black background. 1865 I think ;) I can maybe dig it up for you as an idea for a suggest routine? IIRC, it involves using 30 second intervals ( with matching rest pauses) while moving between standing, quad hop and supine positions.
Also, I once stumbled on a site that detailed a exercise program based on EB patterns. Can't recollect the URL. Probably something dumb like www.breath.com My gut tells it might one of the old time strongmens routines, maybe? If you've got the time, have fun digging thru all this -

Get it.
While in Russia at one of our (Kadochnikov System) instructor's house, his father (a man in his late 70's) broke out a VERY old, one of the original design, Frolov device. He had heard I used one, and was very excited. He sat i his chair and did some exercises that astounded me for such an older man who had smoked, etc. He was able to at one point hold his breath for five minutes...eventually, after he and I talked back and forth about it for about 20 minutes, my translator.instructor got tired and asked his father and I to stop discussing it...we were waaaay too end to it.
Astounding. Five minutes.
The device is great for breath control and lung capacity enhancement, beisdes the purported health claims (which I have not invesitgated enough to make an opinon). As for dynamic breathing (breathing CCIA in movement) (sorry that was K-Sys lingo), you will have to use the device in a way to train for such things, as it is a mainly static breathing device (sitting in your chair, not moving). I have used it in such ways as moving about while using the device, etc.
It's all about applying tools and knowledge.

Thank you all for your kind and insightful feedback.
I am becoming more aware of performance breathing through trial and error. As far as EB goes, I ordered the book to learn more about it. Coach Sonnon, I appreciate your candor in regards to not having explored the bottom of the well for EB as opposed to several arm chair theorists who defend their positions instead copping to a simple "I don't know."
thanks again all.
