(I have also noted this in my training log, for future reference)

Injury Situation Recap:

If I stand with my left arm hanging at my side, point my left thumb to my left, and raise my left arm up to the left while keeping the arm straight, I have a limited ROM before I hit the pain zone. At the beginning of my rehab, I could raise my arm just a few degrees before encountering pain. Today, I can raise my arm to about 60-80 degrees - close to parallel to the ground but not quite. With my arm starting at the extended overhead position, I can lower it in the same plane of motion about 25 degrees before I encounter the pain threshould. Pressing movements are also problematic for my shoulder, unless I'm doing wall pushups, which is one of my rehab-prescribed drill.

Today was the first session with the physical therapist for the first time in almost a month. We had to wait for the insurance company and doctor to approve four more sessions.

The emphasis of this session was on re-evaluation of my shoulder. The PT noticed improved ROM in various angles. She also measured my strength in various angles as I lay face up on a table. Curiously, she said my strength had decreased for the test in which my arm starts straight by my side and I try to extend it out to my left while she holds the measuring device against my upper arm. I should have told her that I was still on the anti-inflammatory medication the last time I saw her, stopped taking it when the prescription ran out, and haven't been on it for a couple of weeks already.

She then had me sit for a 10 minutes with a heat pack and the electric muscle stimulator.

Then, she had me do most of my usual rehab routine.

She did not approve of me using 5lb clubbells after she asked me to demonstrate some of the motions I would use with them. I showed the basic swing, swipe and pendulums. I couldn't think of a motion with the 5lb CBs that she would approve of. She is still concerned about aggravating the pinching in my shoulder with too heavy a weight. The heaviest free weight she let me lift is the 8lb dumbbell, which I use for one of her prescribed drills (bicep curl). When I train on my own, I curl up to 25lbs/arm without pain. However, I will respect her decision.

The PT said she'll revise my routine on Friday since today's emphasis was on re-evaluation.

Paolo,

It's odd that should we encourage less mobility if you feel no impingement through the range of motion, and even stranger that she would suggest lightweight bicup curls. Pain-free mobility is always indicated.

Perhaps your anti-inflams did affect the exam.

I'd say, take her advice or get a second opinion if possible.
