Hi,

I know putting "February, fun and Minnesota" in the same sentence may be an oxymoron if you don't like ice fishing, but I found an indoor athletic challenge that sounds like fun. I plan to be competing in the following event and would enjoy meeting fellow cb enthusiasts after the competition (or during if you are interested in competing). It would be great to meet with other folks who like swinging clubs! :P

The meet will be held on 2/19/05 or 2/26/05; still working on the availability of the facility and will have a definite date set soon. The location will be Health Quest Athletic Club, Ramsey, Minnesota. (A very cool 'old school' facility run by Mason.)

Overview of events:

Men:

1. Max Deadlift, 3 attempts (raw, belt OK)
2. Long Cycle Kettlebell Clean & Press for max reps using two, 24Kg kettlebells
3. USMC Pull-Ups for max reps
4. Snatch test using 24Kg kettlebell ‘Secret Service’ style, in five minutes
5. Shouldering a 100# sandbag, floor to shoulder, max reps in two minutes

Women:

1. Max Deadlift, 3 attempts (raw, belt OK)
2. Long Cycle Kettlebell Clean & Press for max reps using two, 12Kg kettlebells
3. USMC Pull-Ups for max reps (kipping allowed)
4. Snatch test using a 12Kg kettlebell ‘Secret Service’ style, in five minutes
5. Shouldering a 50# sandbag, floor to shoulder, max reps in two minutes

Full rules and event details and will be published no later than 12/31/04.

Event Scoring:

10 points: First Place
8 points: Second Place
7 points: Third Place
6 points: Fourth Place
5 points: Fifth Place
2 points: All other competitors

No weight classes. In the event of a tie, the tie stands.

Wouldn't it be interesting to hold an event similar to this one including cbs in the mix?

Steve Cotter, officer for the US National Kettlebell Federation has proposed dual OCS/GS meets which would be fun.

That said, while I'm sure such a competition as the one above in MN demonstrates one's work capacity, I would be much more impressed by and would be much more interested in a competition which demonstrates one's work sophistication.

Examples would include:

Most impressive Clubbell Combination Routine - where one's ability to apply the ultimate test of strength in full, complete range of motion and sudden, smooth retranslation of forces shine.
Most impressive Body-Flow Kinetic Chain - where one's proprioception, coordination and unexpectedly agile creativity to negotiate three dimensionally shine.
Timed TEAM Obstacle Course Navigation (such as seen in many Western European countries) - where one's ability to critically think, apply resources and skills and most importantly operate as a team shine.

We've been working towards this, as you can see with Team Clubbell and Team Body-Flow. It will take some time though, since the conventional fitness industry still lags back, thinking merely in terms of reps and pounds. In 5 - 10 years though, the world will not look the same, and we'll see more and more work sophistication 'reality events' such as the one I've described above (it's already fairly common in other countries.)

Coach,

Very interesting....

What are your thoughts of a competition that mixed the work capacity of OCS with the work sophistication you mentioned?

Work capacity deteriorates work sophistication, just as fatigue deteriorates skill, and exhaustion - creativity. Either you work towards doing 'more' or you work towards doing it 'better' (or more creatively.)

There is more room in OCS to do this than any other strength sport considering that OCS involves sophisticated combination routines rather than mere exercises, but again, I am much more impressed by the creativity of the tribe's exploration of Clubbell Combination Routines and Body-Flow Kinetic Chains, than someone's ability to do the same exercise more times with heavier weight. Creativity is the ultimate expression of physical mastery.

I live 5 minutes from ramsey (in champlin), it sounds like an interesting event, I know of only one other person in minnesota that is a cst tribe member (jason E) and I doubt it will take much arm twisting to get him to go. I look forward to seeing you there.

I've been in touch with Mason previously. He's a good guy, and is curious about Clubbells and CST. Healthquest is a fairly unique gym (for MN) that offers Olympic lifting, Strongman training, kettlebells, and MMA. I'm sure it will be a fun competition to watch!

I will be happy to attend if my work schedule allows.
