View Full Version : Softwork DVD Review

Hello all,
I have been seriously impressed and inspired by Softwork, and thought I would post a review of it. For those who don't me, I am a former Affiliate Instructor with Systema UK, so have experience in a systema style of softwork, alongside former instructor in JKD/Thai Boxing/Escrima and a few other arts. It is clear to me that softwork differs from anything else I have trained, and on seeing and exploring softwork I knew I had to get Scott over to the UK, and cant wait to see him in October.

Anyway, here is my review:

Softwork DVD, Scott Sonnon

After 14 days of eager anticipation, it has arrived, Scott Sonnons ‘Softwork’, and it’s even better than I anticipated. It’s difficult to know where to start due to the vast amount of information on the two DVD’s, but I’ll give it a try!

First, the presentation looks great, beautiful cover design and the content on the box instantly grabbed my attention. It’s a two-disk set, and I wonder how much better that would have been if mastered onto a dual layer disk rather than two disks, hell if nothing else I get to do some body flow as I engage the DVD player to swap disks.

The DVD is broken into sections, as most are these days, sections covered are:

Disk 1

Shock Absorption
Strategies
Leg Fencing
Touch Response
Putting It All Together
Ground Evasion

Disk 2

Blade Work
Stick Work
Ground Fighting
Guiding Flow
Grappling
Coaching Guidance

Overall there is over 3 hours of content, and that is a lot of value for your money, but not only that, the content is great, informative, well explained and contains non-stop demonstrations.

For those with RMAX experience, you will instantly recognise RMAX core components and how they all come together, namely as softwork. The methods of Shock Absorption, Body Flow etc, are all there in abundance and are demonstrated beautifully between Scott and Dan. The DVD is exceptionally complete, structured, progressive and inspirational, taking you through component after component in such a way it makes me want to run out and get a few of my students together and go ‘play’. This is the culmination of RMAX, what many of us were probably looking for, how Arthrokinetics, Leg Fencing etc come together in a complete format. For those without RMAX experience, then quite simply it will be spellbinding, demonstrating sophisticated motion and grace, alongside what many would call high-level martial arts ability. If viewed correctly this DVD has the capacity to alter how you train, and how to maximise your training methodology. It will bring to you many principles and applications, such as how to strike and absorb strikes efficiently, introduce you to the world of relaxation and intuitive movement, show you how to go with the flow and move efficiently within your environment.

Continuing the voyage, Scott shows you how to gain a deeper understanding of fear reactivity, how it can inhibit progression, and how softwork can break those binds, allowing you to train constructively and progressively. Then we move onto groundwork, blade and stick, grappling and more, all covered on disk 2, and again each section follows a continually structured path. Watching the DVD you can see how to take drills and apply them, and for the beginning martial artist or seasoned martial artist the drills presented can be applied to existing training, or for moving on existing RMAX training.

Coach Sonnon is not only able to demonstrate with great finesse, but is also able to explain with great clarity, and I can think of few people who have his ability to convey his ideas and understanding of how the body moves and responds. I have found that Coach Sonnon’s work has increased my knowledge and ability with softwork and supersedes the training in this area I have had with other systems.

Overall I was impressed with both the quality of production and content, and find little to fault with other than a suggestion that an introduction at the beginning would have been great. For me this DVD is going to be watched over and over, as there is much to be gleaned, and much to play with.

Very comprehensive review, Andrew - thank you for taking the time to generate it, and importantly, making it so widely availible here so others can gain some greater appreciation of Scott's latest offerings.

Cheers

You are welcome,
I must have watched it over 7 times now, i really love Leg Density, and have taken a lot from that. A lot of time what i am taking in is the subtle explanations of structure, and density, and how the body moves, and how due to its movement it can be exploited and manipulated. The explanations are great.

Although i have watched this many times, i will be watching it more, as when Anthony comes up here next week with a couple of his students, we will be experimenting in a big way. We will put some footage up of what we have done.....

We cant wait to hook up and go 'play'
Andrew.

Leg Density and Structure is one of my favorite topics as well coming from a Sambo and kickboxing background.

I'm really looking forward to the videos you and Anthony put up here, as well as your article for CST Magazine!

Just got my copy in the post today, it's much better than I expected, and I was expecting a lot lol.

I'm gonna watch the two discs over and over and try and get some people from muaythai to train with me.

I can see and understand what all the drills are about and also how it ties in with everything else you have produced.

It's inspired me to get this schema article done and i'm doing a brain-storm at the moment. I'm trying to do it so that it covers the whole of rmax, a big job so wait a week or so.

It's so much easier to understand the concepts when shown practically on film rather than just reading them.

In the intergrating structure dvd, do you show the concepts as well as explain them like in the softwork dvd?

Excellent job on the softwork coach, I know what to do between now and october hehe.

Cheers.

Softwork is 20% lecture and 80% demonstration. Integrating Structure is the reverse percentage. I look forward to your article and meeting you in October, amigo.

Cant wait for Integrating Structure. Softwork is one of the best DVD's I have ever seen, and as an ex UK affiliate systema instructor I thought I knew all about biomechanics and absorbing strikes. That was until I got this. The clarity of the information provided is inspiring.

Since training with my students in softwork their comprehension as to how to move and zero out impact has improved dramatically.

Thank you Coach Sonnon for another great lesson.

Roll on October.

Firstly apologies to Coach Sonnon for telling you I would be writing a review on the Softwork DVD. I found it difficult to not repeat what others (yes than means you Mr. Usher) have put so well.

I would like however to give my two cents on the Softwork DVD. As many of the tribe members will probably note I was previously involved in Systema and was a instructor in systema and regrettably my past experience does shape the way that I approach my training and any materials associated with it , Sadly I have to admit that I did expect Softwork to be some thing similar to systema.

However, what I saw during my first viewing of the Softwork DVD shocked. It was not only the most advanced display of movement I have every seen, but the most coherent and compensate martial on response based combat.

There is not a part any part of the information presented that isn’t 100% unique. I have never seen anyone demonstrate a understanding of movement close to that given by Coach Sonnon and certainly no one has ever given a better explanation.

The demonstrations given by Coach Sonnon and Dan are enjoyable and exciting.

Sadly my only fear many people form the Russian martial arts may through ignorance may assume that Softwork is already contained current training regime. In fact I have already spoken to about a dozen people that I previously trained with in systema who gave me words to similar effect.

I feel a great deal of sadness for anyone misses out on the chance to advance there ability through Coach Sonnon’s unique approach.

When I look at Softwork, I feel that it is what my previous training promised but never delivered.

Big thank you to Coach Sonnon for sharing Softwork with us.
