View Full Version : Getting the Message across

How would you (the tribe) get the message across to the bodybuilders in your gym, dojo, classes, teams. To make a shift for that to training as we do in RMAX or even like an athlete.
I have a number of guys on the CRT (Corrections Response Team) who are big in to bodybuilding and I'm not to sure on how to get this aross without being harsh or like.
Any Ideas?

From my perspective you show them by living it.
You have to have quite a bit of leverage with someone to simply tell them to change. If you can be an example to them of what is possible they are more likely to become interested.
Also share with them what is here. Show them the RMAX materials that you have. Send them links to the CST Mag articles that you think might influence them.
Above all understand that each of them has individual reasons for their attachment to body building, and the more you get to know them, and their specific density the better able you will be to help them.
Hope this helps.

The best way to share the radiance of RMAX is to continue to become a better ambassador of yourself. Breath easy, stand tall, move like mercury and swing a heavy Clubbell. As you become more of yourself, others naturally gravitate towards you.

"A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Bottom line, you need to make them want to be change, then the game is over. The best bet is what Slade and Scott have already told you--show them a better way, and show them results. I would also add that when they express a need, try to help them using RMAX approaches. For example, if they complain about sore joints, suggest Warrior Wellness. Sooner or later, they will complain, you will be able to offer a positive solution, and when this happens often enough, they'll catch on.
Yours,
Glenn

Well that has been my approach so far. A few of the guys have changed. But the hard core lifters have not buged yet. Like most things give it time.
Thanks for the input.

Brent,
You don't need to change them. Do your own thing. Enjoy the company that doing so gives you. Love it.

Brent,
I agreed with what Coach Sonnon and Slade wrote about the subject. I think you should consider their advice. I would like to share with you my own experience in communicating RMAX. I work in a health club, the largest health club in NYC, the "New York Sports Clubs". There are tons of "Body Building" personal trainers, human looking robots on treadmills, and real sincere human beings looking for authentic self improvement and self enpowerment.
As a personal trainer (I dislike this title and I see myself more as a movement instructor), I do not agree with the current health and fitness doctrine of NYSC and with many personal trainers' paradigm of health and optimal performance which is based on body building and muscle magazine science. Personally I have been teased for my own personal practice of RMAX (They love my hip tlits), made fun of for reading books relating to RMAX or philosophical subjects (my method is coined as Baoism), mocked for performance breathing and vibrational exercises, back stabbed (telling club members that I sux as a personal trainer), and been physically challenged. I can give you a list of war stories, but I wont now. What is important is the process and not so much the end.
I can tell you that I have clients who have been with me for 4 years and I LOVE sharing my RMAX with them. I do not hide my source or want them to be depended on me. Most trainers are afraid of this, but that is not my Tao. I am passionate about doing odd circular movements on the gym floor and swing these iron bats around which has gotten some attention from a few folks. So much attention that I have given a brief history and function of CST and RMAX presentation. Just recently some personal trainers have opened up to me and asked if I can show them some of my "Baoism". LOL.
Here is what I did and didnt do when I communicated RMAX/CST.
1. I didnt act like Moses and preach RMAX and CST as the gospel! I lived RMAX and CST. People shall know the tree by its fruits.
2. I didnt argue or verbally fight back against non-believers or critical a--holes at the gym. I let go of my ego and focus on the process and gave the end to the higher power.
3. I played like a free sprited boy who made a angel in the snow and I didnt care that men or women thought about me when they were staring at my hips when I was moving. LOL. Keep your mind like child and be free!
4. Ask yourself is it my ego that wants them to change their view or do I want to share an experience? When you want to share an experience like a good movie you saw, then it is all good because you are not forcing a value but communicating a value. But, on the other hand, if you are forcing the value, and mentally wanting them to see your value regardless if they want it or not, then maybe your ego needs to be checked? Well I hope this helps.
Your CST friend,
Bao Founder of Baoism

Bao,
Can you convert this into an article for CST Magazine? "The Bao of CST" - brilliant. That should be your CST website when you receive your certification, amigo!

Coach Sonnon,
I will rewrite my message in an article format and send my draft Ryan. I can not believe my dumb arse struggles from my job place and coworkers in the fitness industry is going to be published. LOL. Thanks for the support and my clients loves your body of work, Scott. Maybe one day when I hold my own thing thing in NYC, you can meet all the people you have touched indirectly.
Much Love,
Bao

Bao,
If everyone instantly agreed with everything you were saying, then you'd be doing nothing new (to the mainstream) and as a result not contributing to anyone's growth, including your own. Just like the body, society needs to be challenged to grow. The objection of the "experts" in the field is a sure sign of your improving success!

One has no choice really. People need to see it to believe it. Its very hard for people to tackle, since they are so brainwashed with all those myths out there, espically the "no pain, no gain' myth.
Other trainers in my room, train more "lets kill you" method and people are sore and they love it, yet they don't see that much results either, but they stick with it...They don't get the whole picture of the Total lifestyle change they are not ready for better living.
They see me work out and go "wow"...thats to hard for
me..weird  :D
I try to educate them, but that don't seem to get it. I do my best, but my battle is with all the myths and magazines, and government as well brainwashing them. They never believe anything that comes over with me, but will quickly beleive some ass in a magazine though. Gives me a headache.
I just do my best to better me and my family. ALl I can do

I've been invited to present on CST at several locations where the overwhelming doctrine is POWER and DOMINATION and WIN. They have lots of talented, hardcore athletes with fire in their bellies and the desire to find the next competitive edge before someone else does.
There was a time that I lived like that, but for now I'm on a different path with different values. It would be fun to return to hardcore competition, but it's not a priority.
As stated above, the easiest way to develop interest is to be a living example that makes others realize you're on to something. When I go before these athletes, I will face several challenges:
1. Though I've lost a lot of weight and dramatically improved my overall conditioning, I still have a gut and I'm not yet in competitive shape.
2. I've never been a strength-oriented athlete, and even at my competitive peak I always preferred to work skill instead of power. My muscle is mostly incidental rather than intentional.
3. Though I've learned some interesting concepts and was inspired by the "Body of Work" tape released by Muscle Media years ago, I've never bought into the culture of bodybuilding. I truly admire the discipline of those who compete, but don't share the interest.
You can see where I might have some difficulty inspiring some of these hardcore people at first sight...
The important thing for me to remember is that I'm not going there to "sell" them on RMAX, CST, or even myself. I'll be going to share some information that they might find useful and worth pursuing further. Each person I talk to has their own priorities and perceived needs, and they have to decide for themselves whether they are interested in what I am offering.
When people ask me questions, it's important for me to share my own experiences and what it has done for me, and to let them decide how that might relate to their own needs. People relate better to stories than to technical data... and the most compelling story you can ever tell is your own.
In our own ways, all of us are in some version of Bao's shoes. Each person is a representative of their own training habits. Due to social "norms", some people restrict themselves, but to what advantage? They give up on portions of their own potential, and the long-term product is always one of greater limitations.
Freedom starts with the ability to feel good within your self, and about your self. I feel the ultimate transformation is from one of feeling restricted in a world of limitations to one of feeling unrestricted in a world of broad horizons. Become free, and others will follow.

I'd like to start by saying thank you everyone for sharing threads like this I like most.
My intent on the sharing RMAX with my team is one of brotherhood, I see these guys almost more than my wife. So we have a bond and I want nothing but the best for them. Sense joining the team and working for the County, they have put me in to a place to teach them. I have and they realy enjoy my methods and you'r (Scott's and the Tribes). But the next two weekends I'm enrolled in a class so I can teach for the state. I think that I do lead and show by actions.
again I'd like to say thank you for sharing and I take your words with the spirit there are given.

I couldn't agree more that the most powerful way to share RMAX with others is to walk the walk. Live it. Breathe it. Be it.
That said, it can also be beneficial to know your audience.
Like Jason said:

Whenever I talk to these fellas I make sure to let them know that RMAX/CST is NOT the opposite of their doctrine. The RMAX doctrine is not WEAKNESS and SUBMISSIVENESS and LOSE, but rather a different way of looking at the aforementioned ideas.
I still love POWER, DOMINATION, and WINNING...it's just that now my view of what those terms mean is a bit different.

I tuned in to the thread late...
Sorry to hear about your experiences, Bao. I'm lucky at the club that I work at that everyone has been hired because they bring something DIFFERENT to the table, rather than a bunch of clones (clowns?)
I let my people speak for themselves. I use whatever tool I need to to help these people re-access their bodies and motion. When I frame things in a quasi-cst format, they become interested and excited rather then depressed about the new part-time job they think exercise is going to be.
I certainly try to follow the advice that others have listed. Lead by example and those who chose to train similarly become my biggest advocates.
FWIW,
Vince

Well I have some good news,
First I'm sorry for being away for this long but I've been in a class for the state.
but anywho, A good part of the CRT guys (my-self, Rogers, Jay) are all in this class for the state for Feild Defensive Tatics Instructor.
We finshed the first three days this last weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun). With most of the other students being a good bit sore but none of CRT were.
I'd like to say that would be from the Warrior Wellnes that we have been doing. I know that we have not done a lot of 'normal' conditioning for this class but, I feel realy great.
Plus I've been doing extra training the others have not on Monday and Tuesday. I start out a little stiff but after Warrior Wellness I'm ready to rock.
Well I think this turned the head of the guys, Rogers and Jay are the two biggest guys in to the bodybuilding.
Again Thanks
