Howdy! Wanted to comment on Kili--unfortunately, I wasn't able to attempt the climb this summer. How do I put this...the metric for climbing Kili is the ascent of 2000 feet in 3 hours. I tested this on Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge in Washington, and using an adaptation of the "Effortless Gait" approach, achieved this level of fitness with two months to go in training! My wife reached it with about 6 weeks to go...but my daughter couldn't do it without killing herself (she did make it up, but, WHOA was she trashed!) I decided that the climb wouldn't be a positive experience for her,and changed my plans to two weeks on the Serengeti. We had the time of our lives. I did get to climb on Kili for a half-day, and REALLY felt the deconditioning and altitude. My plan is to return to Tanzania within 18 months, and go for it by myself. It will be a butt-kicking experience, but I can't wait.
