Guys and gals

Looking over the clips that Scott posted on the Body Flow as Sport thread, I notice something intresting.

Namely, that the jinga (from the capoeira clips) looks a lot like an extended version of the box step from IOUF.

FYI, Jinga / ginga can be seen here -

I always felt like I was doing a little dance doing the box step ;-)

Cool stuff these parallel developments ;-) Gives you ideas you might not have otherwise thought of.

*bob_stra checks schedule to see if he can fit in a few capoeira classes*

Bob,
I think it's rather universal (I've seen it referenced in Silat and Wushu), though not applied to the extent that it is in arts like Capoeira and ROSS. Had I not found ROSS as my vehicle, I suspect I would have gravitated to Capoeira (but then I would have missed out on all of that Russian and Cossack folk music  ). Love that stuff.

Silat and Wushu? Really?

*sound of bob_stra scurrying away to do some research*

Scott (or anyone) - have any links to clips of cossak dancing?

(idiotically, I *again* missed both the Siberian Cossacks AND the Shaolin Monks when they were in town this year. I'm hoping they swing back thru here next year)

Jon, you're right. Bob Metz showed me the connection and I forgot about that one.

Thank you kindly.

You must be using something other than google to find these. I put in +cossack +dancing +clips and....well, let just say I got some *interesting* results.

Y'know, now that I watch that video again, he took that shot really well. Watch that midair long-arm twist into the front ground engagement... :o

Don't suppose Google automatically localizes by region, does it? The first page I get is -

"Teens 'n' Toys Movie Preview"

(I leave the rest to your imagination ;-)

I think I might have typed +mpeg instead of +clips to get that result.

(checks)

Yep.

Nevertheless. still can't get the "infonukes" site to pop up.

Funny thing Bob, I was a professional dancer for ten years and the box step is no different from "step, ball, change" dance step.

So many of the moves in Fisticuffs look like dancing it's great.

Sincerly,
James Linn

;-)

I help in teaching one of the kids MMA classes down here. They are forever having giggling fits watch me go thru my "warmups" (box step, screwing knees, figure 8 dance, etc etc etc).

I make it a point to whoop on them using only these movements, so I can latter taunt them with "who's dancing now?".

Ahh....preteens....too little to really hurt you...bliss ;-)
