Authorities do not rule out connection between bombs

Two bombs found in Loveland area parks were constructed differently, but authorities have not ruled out a connection.

Neither of the bombs — one found in the city limits and one just south of town — exploded.

Bomb experts diffused them before anyone was injured.

The differences — one bomb was chemically based and the other was not — point to unrelated incidents while the timeframe points to a possible connection, said Eloise Campanella, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

The bomb found near the Loveland bike path was chemically based, and the one found in the county was not.

“We have nothing to tie them together,” said Loveland Police Sgt. Rae Bontz.

“That’s different from the one (the Sheriff’s Office) has.”

However until investigators find who is responsible, they cannot rule out a connection between the bombs. Both homemade bombs had fuses and were crudely made.

The fact that two were found within two weeks of each other warrants looking into a possible connection, investigators said.

“Normally you don’t have a lot of different people building bombs,” Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Sullivan said.

A resident found one bomb, in a Doritos bag, just off the bike path at First Street and Taft Avenue Saturday. It was constructed with some sort of chemical combination designed to eat through the container and detonate the device, Rae Bontz said. It did not work.

Police are still looking into what chemicals were used.

The next day, Sunday, another resident called the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office to report a bomb he found days earlier near Boedecker Lake. This one had a pyrotechnic device taped to an aerosol can, authorities said.

Evidence technicians with the Loveland Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office are processing the bombs for clues.

Experts may be able to find fingerprints on the duct tape attached to the device found by Boedecker Lake, Campanella said.

Police also will look for fingerprints on the bomb found in the Doritos bag, but the water used to diffuse it may have washed away any prints, Bontz said.

In addition to looking for physical evidence, investigators want to hear from anyone who may have information about the bombs.

While neither of the bombs exploded, they could have.

Officials said if there had been a spark near the fuse, either could have exploded and injured someone.

And law enforcement officers acknowledge there could be other devices found in the area. Officers have no way to predict if or when, what components may be in future bombs or what would cause them to detonate.

So, officials warned residents not to touch any device they may find and to keep their pets away from such devices.

“Don’t touch these things,” Bontz said. “Call us.”

Because there are whole bunch of fruitloops in the world. . .

One of these things was found about 1/2 miles from my house, along the bike path where I normally run.

Yeesh!

PS. Before anyone writes to tell me that MA skills won’t save you from a bomb. . . Duh! But awareness might. . .
