A U of P psych professor wondered why only 7.4% of french are fat, despite all that cheese, compared to 22.3 Americans. Comparing portions from Philly and Paris he found these differentials.

Regular McDonadls fries - 72% bigger here
Pizza Hut Pizza - 32% bigger here
Average chocolate bar - 41% bigger here
Coke - 52% bigger here
Hot dog - 63% bigger
Ice Cream cone - 24%

that's an average of 47% bigger
same menu=twice the food

I remember reading once that everyone needs to eat roughly 5000 calories a day to keep the fast food and snack food (and probably soft drink) industries going in the US. So, advertisements push us towards these kinds of food, and often, and we are encouraged to indulge ourselves and to splurge, but what nobody thinks of is this: If we splurge every day, then it's not a splurge. It become a habit.

I am all for the occasional splurge, but the self-satisfaction and esoteric pleasure derived from discipline is a virtue sadly lacking in our society.

Don't get me wrong here. I eat poorly at times, and at present am carrying too much bodyfat. I am not casting stones, I am merely commenting.
