Dear friends,

As you know I've had to pull away from forum frequency dedicating my time to organizational development of the instructor cadre and coaching staff, as well as the panoply of projects that RMAX has glutted me for 2005.

However, I've been keeping the lid on a major announcement until all of the papers were signed, sealed and delivered.

I've been contracted to star in a feature length motion picture called AGONY. Originally I was contacted to train the actor for the lead role since they wanted him dropping from 290 to 230lbs. In particular they want him training CST to drop down, since his character is a Clubbell athlete in the movie. Yes, the entire Clubbell line will have high visual placement in the film!

As it unfolded in the various interviews, they approached me to also choreograph the fight scenes (unarmed, knife, hangun and improv. weaponry).

However, through the preliminary discussions on choreography, they decided that in order to keep the "sexiness" of the choreography, they asked if I would be willing to star in the film itself, and modified the screen play to broaden the arch-nemisis' character development.

As it happens, through shifting around my schedule, I accepted the contract terms. This will be major exposure for CST, and really get the word out about our approach to physical culture.

Please understand that although not present like I used to be, I'm heavily involved in the proliferation of our system, as well as the ongoing research and development of our key RMAX product line. It pleases me to no end to come to the forum and see that the activity has not waned at all, and that you are all very active in the Socratic dialectic process of "Give Support - Get Support."

The first official movie trailer has been released!

Check it out at the official movie teaser:

Scott,

Somehow this move has seemed inevitable to me for about two to three years. Congratulations, and all I can say is it's about time someone figured out casting!

Respectfully,
Glenn

PS--The big problem I see is that the audience will think your movement is all special effects a la The Matrix or the Hong Kong chop socky films. Hopefully, you'll get the publicity and they'll figure out you really can do that and, what's more, teach other people to do it too!

Very cool! 8) This is great publicity, and a phenomenal opportunity to display the benefits you've realized from your own personal practice. From what you've shared, it sounds like an interesting action/adventure flick!

When will you start shooting, and do they also want to have a few extra CB athletes in the film for training/other scenes?

Great Stuff :!:

This can only be awesome for CST, just think of the way movies have helped bring so many things into the public eye (I know they aren't always great things like CST but there have been some good ones). Think of...

Alias and Enough (JLO movie): Big boost for awareness of Krav Maga

White Men Can't Jump: Big increase in the number of guys playing 2on2 at local blacktop

Segal: People started wanting to do Aikido

etc,etc,etc

This will be awesome!

Actually, what's really interesting is that the company is simultaneously filming a documentary of the movie while filming the movie. It's quite confusing at times, so we were advised to just remain in character at all times, much like method acting prep.

Thursday and Friday are back at the gun range bay working on live fire weapon transfers between handgun, knife and baton. Since soon after 9/11, I've avoided this kind of work, because I just didn't want to go there emotionally any longer. It was a life choice. But now as an actor, I feel quite liberated from the baggage I was carrying since then. Good fun to train like this again.

The heroism in a story is judged by the challenge represented by the villain. The more intelligent/skilled/organized/ruthless/etc. the villain, the greater the good accomplished in overcoming them. I can also think of some movies where the villain was by far my favorite character because they were so well portrayed.

Be a great villain, and that alone can make the movie worth seeing over and over. (No pressure or anything. :P )

Thanks folks. Shutterdog Media together with Treason Entertainment are amazing to work with. Twelve hours of high amplitude, high speed tactical fighting between two heavy hitting characters yesterday has left me wobbling around this morning.

The cinematic genius of this film is going to make a HUGE impact on the big screen. The choreography is totally unheard of, completely unique and powerful. I can say that much as a life long student of action genre. But the way that Treason Films is shooting this, cutting it together and weaving subtle movie magic into an already incredible portrayal of the character depth is probably the most exciting film I've ever watched (from the inside that is.) It's ALREADY receiving so much international attention that it's developed a cult following.

It's such an honor to work with such great actors, cast, crew and of course production and directing staff.

This will be huge, folks. Huge.

Listen, one of the cast (yet to be identified  ) sent some raw, uncut footage of the fight scene over the net. Bad move considering that every message is stored somewhere, so the bottom line is that that footage is now floating around the file transfer programs like Kaza and Limewire. I'm about to leave for another shoot today: chase scene. But I had an interesting story first...

When we were filming at the gun range in my bay, the camera caught a pretty amazing shot (pun intended). I haven't range shooting for about 5 years for personal reasons. Since we were doing live fire in the film, there were incredible safety precautions I insisted upon. When the first five rounds left my handgun (a lovely SigSaur P226), I was continually reorienting my torso on the target while laterally moving. For those who don't know combat handgunning, it's difficult to keep the torso "quiet" of the 'bouncing' which bipedalism creates. Five perfect holes appeared in a tight group on the targets "head". After the cut, I kept staring at the target because it was too surreal.

Well, anyway the twist on the story is that another big production company put in a bid for the actual target because they thought it was so damn cool. 8) Although they didn't believe me, I insisted that it had been YEARS since I've been shooting. The rangemaster told me I was full of it.

Funny story: we were filming the chase scene (can't tell you more than that). Although the streets were blocked off, a patrol car drove right through the set. Without revealing too much, the director (sitting in the back seat starts yelling over the walkie-talkie for everyone to 'run with it'). So the 'chase scene' became a car chase across town. Fun stuff laying down rubber sideways... with city permission. Freaking cool shots that the cameramen landed. Can't wait to see the finished product!

We finally located the bootleg footage. This is from the final fight scene, but without any special effects, cuts or audio. It's just the raw footage.

Agony Final Fight Scene (http://www.circularstrengthmag.com/images/agonyfight.mov) (100MB MOV file)

Please don't share this outside the forum.

Now, I'll give you a little insight into the story. My character, Hub, is a hit man, with the lead character, Chase, another hit man under the same contractor. For reasons which only the movie will reveal, Hub has been called in to 'clean' Chase. What you see is part of the collision of those two pros.

Hub's background is as a smooth operator who was 'released' from the military due to excessive force issues during black ops. Hub still feels that he's 'taking out the trash' by doing his civic duty of pulling hits. He has an intense amount of military combatives training, and always sticks to the SOP, because "it works" (but as you'll see in the clip, ends up being his Achilles.) His panopoly of weaponry demonstrates this 'dedication' - slick, fast, guerilla tactics.

Chase's background involves growing up on the streets of Chi-town, thrust into the 'business' way too early an age. Of Irish decent, his bare knuckle boxing and catch wrestling is obvious. Like Irish bareknuckle and catch, all of his fighting is improvisational and street savvy... depending much on his 260lbs of muscle.

The producers asked me to design a fight scene that was raw, which departed from the typical martial art prettiness which leaves viewers wanting to participate in the "cool moves." They asked me to design a fight scene which communicates the emotional climate of a fight... and leaves viewers wanting to flee the area... They allowed me to design the reality of a fight.

I'm very proud of the result, and this is just the beginning. When you see the actual movie??? :o :D Just be prepared for something totally new, even for the Independent film scene!

If this clip is like the movie, it'll be the worst date movie ever. Sez me who likes screwball comedies.

dealing beforehand: "well okay we can go to this action movie but then you'll owe me a chick flick"

during the movie: I constantly pluck his sleeve "what's he doing? what was that! who just got hit? is it over? is that a weapon?"

dealing afterward: "okay you owe me TWO chick flicks and an ethnic festival"

And an ethnic festival????

Connie, I like ethnic festivals, but of course I'm an anthropologist. All that food, crazy dances, and of course girls with exotic accents get me every time...

Jason - no girlfriend I know needs coaching on that one. Naturals all!

Yes Ryan, and men with beards and cool outfits.

The BF with whom I had those tradeoffs was a big sophisto jazz freak (think cool and fusion) and was in pain at some of the world music I like (bagpipes, didgis, anything that drones; Indian atonal; oompah bands at Oktoberfest).

He's the one who noticed that Germans in their lederhosen and Scots in their kilts, shop at the very same sock store. for him it was shudderworthy. He was a great sport though - we had a lot of fun with it.

And, it's thanks to him I have such a good film education in things I would NEVER have watched.

Seven Samurai (twice!)
Magnificent Seven (the followup of course)
Godfather (multiple)
French Connection
Die Hard
Lawrence of Arabia

etc. eek.

Now if I can only get QuickTime to play the video portion of this, I'll be a happy camper. For some reason my computer won't decompress it.

Glenn,

I'm having the same Quicktime problem. No luck with Windows Media, Realplayer or Divx either.

The only one that worked on my system was "VLC Media Player."

no luck with Quicktime, Real, or Windows either.

OK, Coach. That was awesome! It was definitely RAW. None of the fancy stuff that just wouldn't happen between two hardened pros.

One thing that occurred to me about the fight, and please correct me if I'm mistaken here. Is this a good example of simple moves being better used in a chaotic flurry?

One of my former teachers believed that one trained basics, got more skilled and refined practicing more difficult combos, drills, techniques, etc., and then in actual application used basics again. It makes sense to me, but I would like your perspective.

Awesome job on the choreography! I can't wait to see the fight with the sound effects put in (i.e., BIFF, SMACK, etc.)

Thanks for the good words, my friend! It was a LOT of fun!

In my experience of traveling around the world with masters and grandmasters of their respective styles, that when push comes to shove, uneless facing someone of total incompetence, one always applies the basics, and everyone tends to perform similarly. Although the vehicles to personal mastery differ, and there we will always display idiosyncracy, we all share the same genes, and hence under force of pressure will choke back to stream-lined, fail-safe, life-support-only-systems.

I wanted to depict something which wasn't some stale, pharmaceutically accurate demonstration. I've never seen anyone in any fight in person or on security, police or military video, perform like they were in a demo. Giving demonstrations is fine, as long as they are explained as such, and not a 'fight'. Drills - the same way. We need this since the best we can hope for in the reality of a suddenly violent confrontation is the worst we've performed in practice. Practicing perfection within imperfection is the key to success, from my perspective.

The producers asked me to craft an example of the emotional collision between two seasoned street assailants. I believe that this scene truly does achieve this goal.

I also wanted to add just how much I learned from working with Paul, the lead actor in the film. In only a few weeks of training, he was fighting at the level of people I'd been training for a couple years. I account this to his world class acting skills of being able to model the emotion of movement.

Not very many people will be able to see it, but there were several times we were totally off script, fighting, but totally in character. The producers just kept filming, while simultaneously trying to quite the screaming people lining the tops of the building who wanted to cheer us on. I admit, it did really energize us! (It was after all 13 hours of filming for 4 minutes of footage :o  ). It was surreal, to be honest, something I'll never forget, and something I totally attribute to Paul's incredible skill as an actor and a warrior.

Just wait until you see the gun range scene!!! But that won't leak I'm certain.

I eagerly look forward to the film, Coach! Cripes, 13 hours for 4 minutes? It's always worth the effort after seeing the final result, though. :P

I also agree that you did capture the necessary emotional content of the melee. It is definitely different than anything else I have seen. I think it is going to be modeled by others. :D

I think I might like it more without all the sound effects. It adds a level of realism that you don't see in movies very often.

And as for the choreography...wow. Just...wow. The only other fight scene I've seen that comes close in sheer emotional intensity and portrays what two real pros would do was in "The Hunted" with Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro.

Excellent job Coach! Can't wait to see the whole movie!

That scene from the "Hunted" was one of my inspirations. By audio, I meant the sound of the fight, not "BIFF! KAPLOW! ZONK!"

I just found out that the producer asked to write me into a final scene, so I get to behind the fish eye again!

It's quite the production. I just saw a portion of one of the scenes recently shot. Amazing cinematic genius. Truly. I feel totally honored to be part of such a piece of art.

Has a release date been set yet?

Scott Sonnon

Not yet. They're assembling the film, from what I'm told of the process, in a unique way, which allows them at any time they see fit, to finish. However, they're artistic perfectionists and keep returning to hit something until it's absolutely on. I can respect that dedication.

Very interesting and awesome don't you think that The first time on screen RMAX is presented to the world, it is presented by a seemingly unique way of filming done by filmographers who are also trying to push the envelope one step beyond.

The meeting of foces here are poetic!

Bad news folks. There were so many thousands of views of this bootleg clip that somehow some of the film's investors got wind of it. Although RMAX isn't responsible for the leak, we are (no one is) allowed to 'host' it, since it could potentially derail the success of the film by revealing too much. They are tracking down the original culprit, but also 'requesting' that any hosts purge the file as well.

So, for those of you who did not get to view the file, I apologize but you'll need to wait for the release date of the film.

cool clip coach! Cant wait to see the finished product. We all get autographed copies right  One thing I'm a little confused on. Under total budget it lists $150,000 is that correct? Its a lot of money sure but not generally considered a big or even decent budget for a movie. I know you love efficientcy but wow!

Holy Geez... talk about unfolding opportunities! Next thing you'll be doing is taking screenwriting classes from Steve Barnes! If you then decide to launch your own production company, like S. Segal, make sure you make better movies!!
