I have the body flow book and video and have viewed both many times. I really enjoy the concept behind them and the movements are just fun no matter what the perpose behind them is. One problem I am having. I see there use for grappling but what about the striking aspects of martial arts? Is there any formula for transfering these tools to a stand up plstform? Thanks

Brian,
It's all based on a foundation of joint mobility (ex. Warrior Wellness).
Also, have you watched Fisticuffs (especially Prime Your Bioenergy, Weaponizing Your Architecture), Softwork DVD, Leg Fencing?

Brian,
Like Ryan said, the foundation is joint mobility. It ALL begins and ends with joint mobility/range of motion. In Scotland, we put the participants through a myriad of ground based drills that had immediate impact on their striking. Maybe some of them could chime in here as well.

Brian,
In Coach Jones`s presentation in Scotland on striking we were led through a good number of ground drills. We started with the neck roll and moved down through the body gaining more mobility in the hips, shoulders and spine.
This allowed all of us to `get out of our own way` to truly begin to use the whole body to striking. (They also brought out a big grin on my face!)
Being on the ground also anchored my body in ways that concentrated my awareness to parts of the body which when I do the same drills standing with only my feet touching the ground, the force acting on my structure is very different.
Hope this helps,
Kind Regards,
Mike McCarthy

Basically any of the body flow movements that increase Range of motion of the shoulders, core etc. At the Softwork Scotland seminar - Brandon had us doing tanktracks and other such exercises for the length of the hall - these opened up the shoulders and allowed for more power in striking.
As Brandon quite rightly said (check out the clip on www.rmax.co.uk) many people talk of using your whole body to strike only then do not. Using your whole body through joint recruitment and core activation will dramatically increase your striking power as many of us can testify from the softwork seminar.
Bodyflow and other rmax concepts are the only methods I have seen which allow for total efficiency in striking - and would encourage you to play with all of the warrior wellness, prime your bioenergy, and body flow stuff. It really does work!
Best of luck :-)
Kind regards,
David
P.S. Check out the clip of Coach Jones' on the rmax uk site if you have any doubts!

Great points.
An additional thought. Part of bodyflow is training you to move through and around resistance. Both the resistance in your own body and the resistance of the ground. The idea of articulating around resistance is a key component of any kind of martial training no matter what the venue.

Man in hardwork coach Sonnon sucker punched both of them ... or was that part of shockability training ... ouch.
Edit: By sucker-punched I mean he didn't give them any warning that he was going to up the ante, and even told the second guy "don't worry I'm not going to hit hard". Reminds me of my Krav instructor when he says "Don't worry we're only going to do this once so go as hard as you can". ;)
