When doing swipes for general CST I have been pausing in the call to order position. Is there any benefit or detriment to doing this?

Thanks,

Bill R.

Bill,

If doing it for general CST I see it as ok. It depends on how long the pause is. The longer the pause the more you lose the training effect that happens when you retransmit force from a yielding eccentric motion (ie. catching it in order) to an explosive concentric motion (forward pendulum). If you bounce out of order immediately into a forward pendulum using the stored elastic energy you will elicit a greater training effect on the CNS.

So for general CST, I recommend just a light pause. less than half a second, in CTO before executing the fwd pendulum.

If you were going for OCS and you wanted to conserve as much energy as possible then I would go right from back position into fwd pendulum, bypassing CTO.

I'm gonna second Chris' suggestion here Bill.

Unless you're working for OCS then there should be a short stop/bounce in Order Position after the Clean to Order and after the Armpit Cast portions of the Swipe. It'll be grueling but oh so worth it.
