I recently had the opportunity to watch Coach Joe Wilson’s DVD Freedom of Movement – Dynamic Range of Motion Drills for Kicking & Foot Fighting.

CST Head Coach Wilson has done an outstanding job with this DVD. The production values are extremely high; the video and audio quality are excellent. There are 20 chapters for easy searching for a favorite exercise. The disk is packed with excellent dynamic range of motion drills to help you develop your range of motion for kicking and foot fighting regardless of your style of martial arts.

Frankly, I don’t have anything negative to say about this disk. So I’ll share the things that I really enjoyed:

The program is filmed in a follow-along with the class format. I think this is a smart move as it helps beginners overcome some of the confusion in how to apply the CST and RMAX materials into a program. I also think this would be a good product for current and future CST coaches for the same reason. This disk is an excellent model on how to put together a training program for a specific goal, in this case range of motion for kicking, but if you read between the lines you have a good template for other goals.

Coach Wilson explains all the concepts and demonstrates the exercises without getting overly technical. He communicates clearly in an engaging manner, he obviously has a great rapport with his students. Coach Wilson’s students perform the exercises together, each with varying ranges of motion. This is very important as I think it helps to humanize the training process. Coach Wilson has an incredible range of motion in the exercises he presents, but this can be intimidating to beginners. Here we have a class of men and women where we can see a wide range of ability. Joe you should be very proud of your students as they come across as a great group of people.

I also enjoyed the fact that Coach Wilson runs a highly disciplined class where manners and respect are important. While this approach may turn off some it should begin to make the CST approach more accessible to traditional gyms and dojos. Unfortunately, some traditional schools may have viewed previous CST and RMAX productions through their own lens of experience and found the approach foreign, so Joe’s video does something to help bridge this gap.

To sum up Coach Joe Wilson has put together a solid instructional video for anyone interested in developing and increasing their range of motion with kicks. This program is suitable for both beginners and advanced practitioners regardless of martial arts style, from tae kwon do to muay thai. It is especially useful as it presents a modern and scientifically sound approach to developing range of motion for kicking while explaining why static stretching does not assist your kicking ability. Finally, this is a really fun workout that I think you’ll really enjoy trying.

I highly recommend that you purchase this DVD, you won’t be disappointed. You can purchase it at Coach Wilson’s website:

Here is Scott Sonnon's testimonial:

I met Joseph Wilson many years ago when he was inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame as America's top instructor of the year. We've trained together many years since then in many different venues and countries. When it comes to full-contact kickboxing, he's seen it all as a pro as well as an amateur competitor. Using his insights into CST as a Head Coach, he's helped me improve my kicking speed, height, power and precision in just 3 days! What he can do with a beginner or novice kickboxer is even more impressive. There are VERY few people I consult and trust in judgement without reservation. When Joe gives me a suggestion about my personal practice, I incorporate it. That's how much weight his insight holds for me.

I've encouraged him to bring his insights to the forefront so that others can share in his amazing abilities as a coach. Knowing how to fight AND coach is such a celebrated rarity that one is very fortunate to have even short exposure to an individual like Joe Wilson. ANYONE who has had exposure to Coach Wilson knows that he is easily one of the top 10 martial art instructors in the world.

Well, finally... Joseph Wilson, 5th degree Black belt, Hand-to-hand Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics Instructor (regularly training THOUSANDS of recruits!), owner of the most successful school in the US South-East and member of the CST Head Coaching staff has put together an incredible DVD full of Dynamic range of motion drills for kicking and footfighting. These are valuable exercises and drills regardless of your kicking style. Learn the basics and then join in a class in session for your own personal workout. The drills presented in this DVD are guaranteed to improve your range of motion. You will be kicking higher, faster and with No pain in No time.

Coach put this into action when he fought a monster 50lbs heavier than him two days ago in Alabama at the Open International San Shou championships.

His coaching equally helped me in not just my kicks but also in my hip recruitment for my throws which led to my gold medal in the same event.

This DVD coupled with Coach Brandon Jones' "Going Ballistic" are the ultimate dynamic duo for striking combat sports!

First, congrats to coaches Sonnon & Wilson on their gold medals!

Next, I recently purchased and viewed the Freedom of Movement DVD. Coach Wilson's flexibility and range of movement are definitely impressive. I actually already use a number of exercises similar to some of those shown in the DVD. In my case, I learned them as 'dynamic stretches' from Thomas Kurz' literature. I also saw several new drills I liked. and variations on standard warrior wellness and dynamic stretching drills that I will try out.

I do have one concern about some of the material presented, and that is that, while Coach Wilson cautions against static stretching (which he just calls 'stretching' and ballistic stretching, some of the drills as performed on the DVD appeared to me to cross the line into ballistic stretching, which is to say that they appear to use momentum to force the muscle group in question to stretch. This appears to be the case in some of the leg raises in which one takes a step before swinging the leg up, and in some of the 'stance dropping' drills in which Coach Wilson appears to be bouncing. I wonder about the safety of performing the drills in that manner and how I can distinguish that from ballistic stetching. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Sincerely,

Coach Wilson presents both an incremental approach as well as a collage of tactics which you may select appropriate to one's skill and training level.

Plyometrics are not advisable to the injured, recovering or chronically overtraining. But they are advantagous to those who are able, gradual and intelligently sensitive to their skill and training level.

I avoid plyometric volume loading my lower back because it was once injured and will always 'remember'. However, to my uninjured areas, I still employ plyometric approaches.

Coach Wilson presents the cutting edge in performance technologies which helped me secure my gold medal in San Shou when I had never gloved up for a pro kickboxing match in a ring before.

Garth-
Thank you for your purchase and your feedback. It is a very common questiion that I get. I think Coach Sonnon did a better job explaining it than I would. I always wncourage incremental progression on each exercise (e.g. in the dvd that is why we start with the 5-5-5 and the slower front raise to stimulate the same muscles as the more plyometric exercises). As with anything pick and choose what you like and plug it in where you feel it will help. If a paticular exercise or method (plyometric) does not feel right for you then skip it and do what feels right to you. Thanks again for your support Brother!

have watched first 10 minutes.
Impressions:
- clubbells are prominently lined against the wall of the dojo
- Warrior Wellness is mentioned straight off
- the first few lower body/leg exercises I've incorporated into my training are the real thing.
For the CST/RMAX follower, this is the real thing. Puts you and your feet 'in the moment'. I'll do the rest, practice assiduously, and I can't see how I could fail.
A must for the tribe!
