To re-introduce myself, I'm a 39-year-old ectomorph (5'9", 140 lbs.) who has basically been sedentary all his life. I am in good health but in poor condition, with particularly tight hamstrings, pecs, and shoulders.

My 5-lb. Clubbells arrived Monday, and what a difference between those little things and the 10-lb. Clubbells! They feel almost too light - or they would if I hadn't done something to my left forearm (while playing with the 10-lb. Clubbells) which has left it a bit tender. I have a tendency to flex my forearms aggressively when I grip hard, which I suspect is both unnecessary and inappropriate. (My forearms are always the first thing to get tired when I'm playing with the Clubbells.) Backward arm circles are easy and feel really good, so I find that I have developed a tendency to grab the Clubbells and do a few of those every so often.

After experimenting with drumming, I tried doing the same kind of alternation with the shoulder cast. (Doing it that way keeps me from knocking the Clubbells together when I'm using two at once.) Is there any reason that should be considered a bad idea?

Brent,

Thanks for the introduction. Glad to have you as a member of the Knuckledragger Tribe!

There's nothing wrong with proper form performing an alternating Shoulder Cast.

Practice the elbow, wrist and hand/finger waves and circles to resolve any residual muscular tension before and after each workout. Study more on "Selective Tension" in my books and videos. It will help your over-grip of your Clubbells.

Yours in strength,
