Is knowing and following ones heart rate really important?
Just wanted to know, since a lot people say it is? any real research to back this up???

that's a very open ended question that could have volumes written in response. You may want to sculpt it a bit to better focus your interest.
In general heart rate is extremely important but the tracking of it can get a bit complicated. What I have found to be much easier and more personal is to track my rate of perceived exertion. If you're systematically taking your training into the performance training and toughness training zones then you'll be making big steps in cardio health. And you can rest assured that your heart will keep up with your efforts. Take another look at Coach Sonnon's, Intuitive Training article with this in mind and I think you'll see what I'm getting at.
