View Full Version : Ankylosing Spondylitis or just back injury, rehab?

Hi, a few months ago I was doing stiff-legged deadlifts (with a light weight as I'm not too strong) and I hurt my back. I thought, at the time, that it was nothing serious so I rested for a couple weeks.

Normally I can touch my toes very easily when standing up. As a result of the injury I could only get my hands to about my knees and was very tight. (There was also some swelling in my lower back, but that went down quickly.) It also hurt when I got up from sitting too quickly, etc. And I was just plan scared to bend over at the waist (I rest my hands on my thighs even now...) with my legs straight.

So, at anyrate, I went to the doctor after a couple weeks and he figured that a nerve was just firing and that my muscle just needed to relax. Hot baths, some massage therapy, some streching/exercise, etc. and I should be fine.

So I went to massage therapist a few times, have been doing yoga once a week. I try and go to the gym now and then (maybe 6 times a month on average plus 4 yoga classes) and I just do a bit of cardio for 20-30 min. and then do some stretches (and maybe a few pushups/situps).

I thought that I was getting better so I just let things be, but the last month things haven't been getting better, maybe they have plateaued...

I can touch my toes when sitting down with a big effort, but not even close when standing (around my knees still). It still hurts when I sneeze/cough, and I can't pick things up as it hurts my back (tried to do judo a few times and no way...). The doctor has told me to go and get an X-ray and that it might (but probably not) be ankylosing spondylitis, which is a type of arthritis of the back. Either way, following the x-ray I'll be going to physiotherapy (and maybe a specialist if I have the anky. spond.).

So it is up to physio, yoga, and as much exercise as I can do to heal me. This is the way I like it as it forces me to be active.

Anyone go through anything similar here? Minor back injury from lifting that led to reduced flexibility that lingered for a while (3-4 months) with no real improvement?

Any tips?

Thanks

Mark, I never had a deadlifting injury but the mother of all articles on this is here:

Lumbarred from Pain-Free Mobility
http://www.circularstrengthmag.com/23/sonnon.html

It talks about exactly what you want, I think. How to move and rehab yourself to restore, well, pain-free back functionality.

Good luck

Mark,

Take a look at the article. From the sounds of it, they're similar experiences.

Thanks a lot you two. I printed out this article as soon as it was linked and then forgot to say thanks! I also found another article by Coach Sonnen (which was in response to Stu's back injury I believe) that I also printed.

It might be just in my mind, but I'm already feeling a bit better doing the exercises from the article and some other agressive stretching...

Here's to making this season about regaining my grace!

Thanks again
