Hey everybody,

First, here are my numbers from 6/24/2002. I was an active person then, teaching swim lessons/being a camp counselor/working another job with constant walking and standing/ PLAYING CAPTURE THE FLAG, but not heavy weight training. I had done heavy weight training before but at that time was not focusing on it (a girl was primary focus  )

6/24/2002

Total: 187 (200-239=borderline high)
HDL: 32 (>60=desirable)
Triglycerides: 57 (>150=elevated)
Ratio: (Total/HDL) 5.8 (< 3.5=ideal)
Fasting Glucose: 87 (50-109=normal)

As you can see, although my total cholesterol was low the HDL was pitiful for an 18 year old and the Total/ HDL ratio was not good either.

Fastforward to now and I have been doing 4 days a week of weight training for a couple months now, and following a low carb approach for about a month with 3 carb ups. The three days before this was taken I went back to a standard american diet so I was worried about the results of the tests. I did a little cardio during this time with BJJ and Muay Thai Kickboxing once a week. Some jump roping and ergometer now and then, ran twice, etc. Nothing substantial.

11/26/2003

Total: 221
HDL: 79
Triglycerides: 77
Total/HDL ratio: 2.8
Fasting Glucose: 87

My total went up into the borderline high area but my total/HDL ratio dropped 3 whole points putting me into the ideal accepted range. My Tri's went up a little, but are still not too high and fasting glucose stayed the same (I believe it was due to my belgium waffle, cookie, and pizza binge on the days prior to the test). What caught my attention the most was the significant jump in HDL. 32 to 79!! And I barely do cardio!!!

I'm very excited and my mother was too. She is going to ask some doctor's at the Framingham Heart Study, where she works, why they believe the significant increase in HDL and decrease in Total/HDL ratio accured because many of them do not believe in the low carb dieting I was doing (neither does she :) ) I know this was long, but thanks for reading.

Having improved cardiac health for a very high risk person like myself is a great feeling.
