OK... now, THAT'S a good cover. Stark, elegant, in-your-face AND reserved.

EDIT 2/17 : The cover changed... I still llike it. A little less elegant, a little more stark and in-your-face.

I was one of the "collection of athletes" who was captivated, enchanted, challenged and slightly bruised by what I saw and felt in Glasgow.

Simple product endorsement: Buy it!

I cant wait for it's release, already have Softwork, just ordered Integrating Structure. This will complete my Softwork to Hardwork collection. How many dvd's will Hardwork "KILLING MY SOFTLY" consist of, and how long is the dvd/dvd's. Also Mike could you explain a little about the events that took place from day one to end of the seminar, and the expectations you had going in. How did your thoughts of RMAX and the Coaches evolve over that course. Not limited just to mike, if anyone who attend Glasgow would like to explain there thoughts of that seminar feel free to respond. It would be nice to have a feel of what we can expect to witness from this groundbreaking dvd.

01-25-2006, 10:53 AM
The hardwork product consists of two disks, and from memory (not at the editing PC, for exact time) disk one is around 1 hour 28 minutes and Disk 2 is 1 hour 33 minutes. The Combat Warm-up/Cool-down disk is around 52 minutes.

Hello Thomas,

Currently very busy. Will post my thoughts later on tonight.
Coach Murdock`s thread captures a lot of it.

Hello Thomas,

Here are some of my thoughts...

Rmax concepts or any concepts remain that unless we live out of them. Many of us know more than we do.

In Glasgow, this knowing-doing gap was what we worked on. I came still living out from the concept of martial techniques despite having studied Rmax for a while via DVD and the forum and practicing with my Rmax partner Andrew.

So, what allowed my view to change?

Coach wilson gave a quick demo and then said "What did you see?"
My mind went " I saw a punch."

"No, stop thinking like a Martial Artist! WHAT did you see?"

Someone said " You hit him"

"Yes! I hit him"

He had transfered force to his partner! His fist was the point of contact between them. It could have been any part of his body.
This pattern of movement may look like a side kick, another an elbow etc..It didn`t matter what label I could give it. The movement pattern or delivery system is what is important.

Coach Sonnon said "The secret of Martial Arts is Don`t be there. Emotionally, physically or conceptually."

To accept and give force in a dynamic sphere allows us to live out of this statement. We have all we need at a spinal level and the learning enviroment created by the coaches allowed us to explore this with safety.

Plus! The whole 2 days flowed. Between exercises we checked our heart rates to bring them down, to help us recover. Before lunch we did Body flow to recover so we come digest our food better and after lunch hip circles to aid digestion.

All the Coaches had a different style, they were not Sonnon clones. They jumped on, hit and rolled with each other with childlike joy.

Force and recovery...deep personal practice...improvise and cherish your uniqueness with others. It did take a while for us to "melt" our group armour but what armour could possibly stay on in this enviroment?

mikemac

...and I would add that since traditional martial art is a belief system, it can be hard to get new concepts past it. How the material was presented did not go head to head with this belief system, what the coaches did instead was to create space for something new with questions, stories, humour, demos, more demos
and drills for us all.

I`m hoping Coach Wilson is telling some of his anecdotes on the DVD! The man is a natural born story teller. :D

Thanks Mike I appreciate it. Rmax has truely transformed my way of thinking, health and movement as well. Looking at where I'm at today, man it sure does feels nice. I work Security at St. Elizabeth's Mental Hospital here in Washington, D.C. an the stress and problems that arise daily are numerous, but Rmax and its products has helped a whole lot in dealing with these things. From dealing with fights, patients, co-workers, etc.. Rmax has made my life a lot easier. Softwork, Warrior Wellness, recent purchases of Intu-Flow, and Integrating Structure are changing me in very positive ways. My whole swagger is different. I know what fighting is and is not. I look at MA and just shake my head now. I have had to watch Softwork at least 100 plus times; slow mo, rewind, slow mo, rewind, and tried to internalize everything said and shown. Recently I found myself in a situation where I was bear hug by an indiviual trying to do me some harm, but I was laughing to myself the whole time because all that tension he was creating trying to hurt me and wrestle with me made it easier for me to come out on top it that situtation. I didnt get nervous, I did what coach said to actively exhaled an just flowed along until an open was there and allow him to create his own take down. That just one of many examples but Softwork has been a blessing to me Just really excited to see what Hardwork has to offer, I know its going to be wonderful.

Thomas,

By the way I have n`t got the hang of the quote function yet. Help anyone?

Sounds like your unique expression is paying dividends not only for yourself but for others around you. Fantastic!

Coach Murdock, hello again! We shared a Taxi on the way to the airport. The concept of "Contouring" is very useful and thank you for some great coaching and teaching at the seminar. You have a very light and caring style , I felt like you were looking out for me.

Ryan Murdock
01-31-2006, 07:24 AM
Thank you for the kind words Mike.

Of course I remember the taxi ride. I was catching a flight to Slovenia and some adventures in the Balkans. And I recall that you were in the midst of some adventures of your own, with a new addition to your family. How are things going? Are you getting more sleep these days?

mikemac
02-01-2006, 09:44 AM
Yes, a little more sleep and things are going very well.

Her name is Phoebe Willow, or as we call her "the Pixie". I don`t think anyone could give me a big smile at 3.00am and warm my heart like she does. :D 8). When she starts rolling around and crawling Daddy`s going to be joining in!

I hope your Balkan adventures went well.

Thanks Mike for the good words. I was also wondering if anyone of the coaches or those who have had the chance to view it could tell me if the Hardwork dvd set is going to be better than the fisticuffs series. I am going to get Hardwork, but was thinking about getting fisticuffs for right now since things got push back with Hardwork an no date as of yet has been set. Should I just wait for Hardwork. Or, have I gotten the two mixed up. Are they two completely different programs.

Ryan Murdock
02-02-2006, 10:04 AM
Mike,

Really glad to hear that everything is going so well. Phoebe, such a nice name. I remember at the seminar how you were bubbling over with Phoebe. Sounds like the start of a great adventure.

Balkan adventures went well. Ended up doing an interview about CST on Slovenian TV. And did a bit of wandering alone in Bosnia, really enjoyed that. Ended up wandering near a minefield, by an abandoned castle on a hill, in search of a Dervish monastery to get a few red fez for some coaches I know. And found time to unwind a bit on a stony Adriatic island in Croatia. A bit cold at that time of year, but the smell and sound of the sea...

Hope to share the mats with you again soon, amigo :D

seems to me RMax has gotten themselves into a situation of way more demand than they have supply. Coach Sonnon's got to be spreading himself pretty thin as it is and I somehow think that all other factors of production are getting pretty taxed by all these upcoming projects. Face it coach your just to good for your own good

And thank heaven for it; may it ever be so - since, in my experience - the opposite is so often the first indicator of a system that has abandoned quality (depth) in favor of gain (accumulation).

Brian,

I appreciate the concern, but as KD implies, RMAX will not place growth and productivity above groundedness (in the vision) and centeredness (in the mission). Balance.

The high demand is a good sign, but we will continue with our steady, consistent and incremental growth.

No shipping to the UK.

RMAX.tv Productions initially granted the right to another company in the UK for distribution of this title. However, since we no longer maintain a business relationship with the said company, RMAX.tv Productions selects not to make any referrals to the aforementioned company.

For two years now, I am a part time NYSC personal trainer , but I used to be a full time personal trainer at NYSC since 1998. Currently I am full time CST instructor only teaching CST/RMAX to my clients. What is your name, bro? Why don't you contact me so we can exchange some ideas? BTW, I have already started teaching CST at NYSC and NYC.

I got my Hardwork DVD set yesterday. I watched disk one and the Bonus Disc “Combat Warm-up and Cool-down.” I will watch disk 2 on Sunday.

This is the perfect compliment to Softworks in my opinion. The material moves very fast, so I can see that I will need to watch it over (and over)again.

IN MY OPINION, Flow-Fighting is 21st century martial arts at its best.

I can't recomend this DVD enough. Coming from my Systema background, I dont have much experience with any form of Hardwork with the exception of any sort of competitive grappling with friends in the backyard.

Reading articles about the Softwork to Hardwork contiuum on the forum left me in a state "Hmm...I think I get it" but I really couldnt internalize an understanding of how to take the skills and drills from the Softwork DVD and incrementally pressure test them. Despite all the discussions on the Forum, I was viewing it as a toggle switch - Either doing the marionette drill or clobbering away full steam. The Hardwork DVD series quickly put into perspective for me how to turn up the heat on skill development and develop the much needed effectiveness I lack with my background's overemphasis on efficiency.

Even if you dont have a partner to practice with, this DVD along with the Softwork DVD will give any CST practioner an idea of how FlowFighting is the partner extension of CST. Anyone who has ever been to a CST IC seminar will be wide-eyed looking at this DVD will be wide-eyed as they see how the 7 key components of structure are criticial in FlowFighting. I absolutely loved seeing how selective tension is developed and applied in Hardwork, as I admit I can be a wet noodle at times

Also, this DVD captures the amazing group dynamic between all the RMAX Head Coaches. Its an absolute pleasure to watch and has already exponentially increased my understanding of how to use CST as my platform for exploring Martial Athletics.

If only more people would grok these critical essentials, Sean...
Seriously, these were the actual intentions of getting this to film (including your last point: a TEAM of autonomous individual mastery, no one better, just expressed differently! Every other MA organization I've seen or encountered is always dictated from on high by an individual around whom everyone flocks. Why isn't it consistently repeatable in EVERY and EACH athlete????????)
