Hope you don't mind the cross-post, but I think this is a helpful approach for those wanting to go low-carb but are daunted by the super long low carb periods used by NHE, Body Opus and Atkins.

-----------------------------------------
I have adapted NHE, BO and Lemmon's Know How among other silly things like info from college nutrition to develop my new, blockbuster approach to slimming down.

Ok not blockbuster but it's working for me pretty well, so I thought I'd share.

First off, carbs are cycled in and out, much like NHE or Body opus. Second, on short no-carb cycles, carb loads are eaten Lemmon-style, which is low-fat and vegetarian. For example, whole wheat toast with two slices of fat-free cheese melted on. No-carb meals are exactly that; no carb added meat or eggs or fish. Nuts are allowed occasionally, but not too much. Carb loads after longer downcycles are less regulated.

I started a month ago at about 13 mm on the sacro-illiac skin fold measurement. I think the algorithm is probably very inaccurate, so I'm just watching the measurement and as long as it goes down, i'm happy.

This is a gradual approach, so rather than the 7-14 day keto-adaptation period, I started with day long mini-cycles, where I'd eat one small carb meal per day.

Then it goes to one carb meal every other day, then every third day, then to a 3/4 pattern like NHE.

As this progresses, you can wait at a certain level for one or more weeks, for adaptation, getting used to it emotionally, and seeing if that's as far as you need to go to reach your goals.

You can adjust the no-carb and carb cycles as you see fit, as long as you have the discipline to do what you need to do. You pretty much have to use some kind of objective metric or you're likely to screw yourself out of progress.

So to recap:

Gradually extend your no-carb cycles, take your time so you don't get too uncomfortable, test for overdoing the carbups. Watch some kind of measurement to make sure you're going in the right direction.

EXERCISE: I haven't been "working out" for a few weeks now. The only training I've done is practice for the KB meet this Saturday. Usually, this has been one set of jerks, followed by ten minutes rest, then one set of snatches. This was done every two or three days. Besides that, I haven't done anything except Warrior Wellness and meditate.

RESULTS:

I haven't had any carbs meals since last Thursday night (that's seven days). This is my longest downcycle by far. Partially as punishment for my thanksgiving transgressions, partly because I want to see if I can get a big boost from a big carbup friday-saturday for the KB meet, and partly because i feel fantastic low-carb.

This morning just out of bed, sacro-illiac was at 10mm, down three mm!

These results are with almost zero exercise, zero discomfort and I have felt great during the whole process, which is important given two jobs and a challenging load in grad school.

I am reaallly looking forward to getting back to real workouts next week after the competition.

Thanks for reading,

Rufus

Rufus - Excellent!

I love how you designed the program for YOU. Results thus far as sounding very good. Keep us posted!

Out of curiousity, what are you studying in grad school?

Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Humilis

designing a program bsed on my needs and redesigning it based on real feedback is working out great, and is probably something everyone needs to do at some point.

I plan to break through the 10% barrier in another month or two, but it will probably be less than that.

I'm almost done a masters in international studies with a concentration in high tech business development, basically a foreign affairs degree (intl politics, economics, relations) coupled with the hitech concentration in the MBA program across campus.
