I expand upon this in the Body-Flow book. Basically, muscle tone refers to a measure of tension. You need a degree of 'tone' to remain anti-gravitational. However, most people train for general tension and remain 'rock hard' or commonly termed as 'muscle bound.' The latter should be discharged in order to firstly gain maximal tension when recruited (because only a relaxed muscle can gain full tension), secondly to lessen the reactionary gap (a tense muscle must first be relaxed then contracted in order to move), and lastly for health reasons (an 'over-tone' muscle strains connective tissue and compresses joint capsules.)
