I have continued my daily, incremental progress in Warrior Wellness for the last 11 weeks. The discipline of doing it and the increased body awareness have been wonderful. My body tells me that I am doing the right thing, but I have a few questions.
I have a couple areas of tension/injury left: Right shoulder, left mid back and right lower back.
Right Shoulder:If I were to put my right arm straight out to the side, palm facing forward and then slowly lower my arm to a dangling position, it is in that lower quadrant that it "hurts." It also feels like it has tension when my shoulder is supporting the weight of my arm when it is straight out to the side.
Left Mid-Back: The best way I can describe it is I feel like at some point in the past, I displaced my vertebrae, the muscles got used to the altered structure and now they don't want to let go.
Right Lower Back:I injured this part of my back last Mother's day carrying the dead 23 lbs. of my sleeping daughter's weight as she rested against my left shoulder. This injury was slowly healing during my Warrior Wellness practice, however after trying to change my tire, I exacerbated the injury.
All of the above are getting better very slowly, for instance, I do not brace for my lower back anymore, I can move through the range of motion without fear of hurting it but I know where I can and can't move. My mid-back, I believe is simply something that will take time and dedication (I focus a lot on deepening my spinal mobility drills.) However...
I am somewhat fearful of my right shoulder. My shoulders, for some reason, have always been prone to injury. I am gentle on my shoulders and many times they feel fine, but recently (the last 2 weeks or so) the right one has been giving me problems. I believe that I hurt this shoulder when I was doing basic circles and was trying to hard to keep my shoulder down, whipping my arm around, outside of its normal range of motion. I must shamefully admit that I was not paying close attention to protocol at that particular moment...
I was getting excited because I felt that I was about ready to work on mastering basic swings with my 10lbs Clubbells. Given the above, should wait longer until I have less tension? I've been practicing basic swings unweighted, mainly to prime my body for the movement, attention to form and breathing. Could very gradual, mindful use of my Clubbells help heal my shoulder(s) and back?
For me, the bottom line is wellness; all other goals are second to that. I have been down the road of working on strength gains only to watch them crumble a foundation built on sand. I appreciate the description of the Clubbells being the weighted extension of mobility wellness.
I appreciate all your thoughts, input, and suggestions. Many thanks in advance.
