Was messing around this morning wrapping a nylon cord around my left thumb. It wasn't tight, just messin. Well I don't know what I did but now I can't move my thumb at all w/o pain.

Waves hurt like heck, circles are tolerable and when done wide offer some comfort.

The pain is shooting up from the base to up the back of the thumb. Feels like a nerve impingement.

Will ice help? I was supposed to return to training today. What can I do?

Chris:

This sounds kind of weird, but could be an impingement... Can you tell us a bit more about where the pressure was?

Also, as a stop-gap measure, ice 10-15 minutes/hour, but be careful with it because the extremities don't handle icing quite as well as big body parts. I would also suggest that you really work wrist and hand mobilizations - circles and infinities. This may be a "backdoor" to unlocking the disturbed motor pattern.

Let us know a bit more and see your doc ASAP if things worsen or as common sense dictates.
