Coach C/Sonnon
Hey fellas,
I posted this in the attributes section because the heading said something about mental aspects.
You may or may not know that I am a few weeks out of colon surgery where they took out 8-10 inches of intestine, and fixed an abdominal hernia.
I am not allowed back on the mats until about late Nov. or early Dec. I am already nervous about getting back on the mats. I worry about not being the same kind of student/ass. teacher that I was before.
I used to be the kind of training partner that would make sure the student would get the correct amount of pain/submission on me that was necessary to end a conflict. It ment nothing to me to go home bruised, balck eyed, sprained/strained etc. for the progress of the newer students. I don't know if I can do the same things as I did before. I don't want to be the kind of guy that won't get on the mat for fear of being hurt/embarrased, but there is a great deal of fear that a well placed elbow or knee or whatever will put me back in the hospital again.
I'm 38 years old now and trying to set a good example for my daughters on never giving up and training as smart as you can, but I still worry about getting hurt, which is kind of new to me.
Can you offer any advice, as I know that you have both been through something like this (injuries) before?
Thanks for everything,
Joe
