    Neck Strength

I am Newbee to CST and INTO FLOW
what can I do to make a STRONG functional Neck-

I was using a neck harness with weights ( high reps)
and appeared to damage something in the NECK joints/
    tissues -

How do I build strong functional neck ?
and INCREASE its girth too ?

    Josh,

First let me ask you what your goal is in trying to increase your neck girth.

Also, check out the member's article archive for information on the neck roll.

Neck girth and neck "strength" are highly touted among some circles, but unless you're a bodybuilder, increased neck range of motion is more efficeint and safer to boot.

    Neck strength

My first interest is functional strength
realizing injuries to the neck can have serious
consequences - I was strength thru full ROM !

I understand the need to be functional in all
directions - my neck muscles have some amenesia
as far as ability to move SIDEWAYS ( the egyption slide)
as shown in Intu-Flow® beginners instruction .

My neck is a bit skinny - and I always appreciated
the look of a strong neck - maybe that is pure vanity ?

    comments always welcome

    Hey Josh,

Please take a moment to pop by the Welcome Mat section of the forum to post an intro, and also set the signature in your profile so that it automatically adds your full real name to your posts. It's our forum courtesy policy around here.

As Coach Jones outlined above, there are two schools of thought here - armouring and agility. The "armouring" school would have you believe that building up the armour casing of rigid muscle around your neck is the way to go. When impact happens they don't move, but the trauma embeds inside their head - you can hear their brain bouncing around in there as the concussion happens. On the other hand, the "agility" camp believes that full-range, responsive strength is more desireable. It gives you the ability to respond to force, to wave it off and dissipate it rather than embed it.

As Coach Jones said above, the neck roll (as presented in the Body-Flow DVD, among other places) is an excellent example of strengthening the neck in the latter fashion.

For further info on the whole armouring vs. agility debate, see Coach Sonnon's article of the same name.

    Cheers!

Member Article Archive - look through titles

    OR

search "armor agility" - I just did this and the article was in the first results page.

If you still have trouble I could do the link.
but I thought it better to splain "how" first

I read an article years ago....and thinking about it now it may actually have been written by Coach Sonnon!....about neck strengthening and people mistakenly believing they need it for grappling sports.

You haven't mentioned why you want to work on strengthening the neck ?

    Ya got that right, Josh!

P.S. How do you like Northern Nevada - it's a lot like Eastern Oregon, correct? My favorite kind of country.
