Can you describe where in your hips you feel the tension that is preventing you from being where you'd like? For example, when I do that, I feel a lot of tension on the left/outside of my butt. If I hit this pose, and then go back to my spinal twist, it's much easier: http://www.footstore.com/wp-content/...is_stretch.jpg

That may or may not be what you are experiencing, but if you can provide a more specific description of your limitation, we will have a better idea of how to help you.

The tension comes from the outside of the hip starting from behind the glutes but what makes me hesitate in pushing either the piriformis or spinal twist is the pain I get in the interior of the groin starting at the psoaos level. It feels like someone pushing their thumbs into the soft tissue.

how close to my chest should I expect my knee to get when performing the pririformis stretch?

ok ok ok...- forget about everything I said. Sure there is discomfort there but I think its only natural and it turns out that I had miss interpreted the proper form for the full spinal twist which is why it seemed so impossible to me. Let's say you have your right knee up and left leg folded back; then my left arm my needs to go up and across the right knee and grab the left knee for leverage while my right hand sits flat behind me (so far so good?). The mistake I was making is that I was trying to grab my left knee at the thigh level turning my palm to the outside as opposed to grabbing it at the front, closer to the shin keeping my palm facing towards me.

    its getting there...

Describe the pain in more detail. Which joint? Which movement? Which angle? Did you have injury there before? etc.
