RMAX Bujinkan II: Combat-Specific Physical Preparedness

Everyone on the staff agrees that the man who scares us most is Ryan Murdock. He has more real life experience putting combat skills to the survival test in the most adverse nooks and cranies of the world than 10 people combined. Pressure testing one's preparation in the conditions that Ryan has produces diamonds. With the acclaim of RMAX Bujinkan 1, he has finally been demanded to release its sequel. And let me tell you folks, it just keeps getting better!!

Elite athletes are constantly searching for an edge. Sports performance institutes spend millions of dollars every year to push the envelope in search of that edge. Martial art is no different. However, despite the fact that martial art is inherently athletic, traditional martial artists are too often reluctant to look beyond their school to gain that same edge.

RMAX Powered Bujinkan defies rigid traditionalism by applying cutting-edge sports science to one of the most successful combat systems worldwide. Using the CST Training Hierarchy Pyramid™ as its model, it fills in missing links such as full-contact sparring and conditioning, and it presents drills that take the hallmarks of mastery in that system and reverse engineer them to provide the clearest possible path.

    Volume One : GPP

Volume One presents a complete system of combat specific conditioning . Specific range of motion drills and detailed exercise breakdown are followed by two progressively sophisticating circuit workouts that can be done in 20 minutes to tax your physical and mental limits. Once mastered, the user can tweak the circuits to address a range of performance goals: from strength, endurance and speed to rapid recovery between bursts.

    Volume Two : SPP

Highly challenging strength exercises, partner drills and original Prasara Body-Flow™ and Clubbell®® combination routines target the sports specific needs of martial art practitioners. Clear connections are drawn between the exercises and the aspects of enhanced performance.

    Volume Three : ASP/MEP

The specific Attributes gained in the first two series are taken to the mats in a blizzard of performance enhancement drills – mastery reverse- engineered. From single to multiple attacker drills, from static to fluid to gloved-up and full on, this final volume in the series explicitly lays out what was once the secret of traditional martial art masters – the progression of form to formlessness – and stomps on the accelerator.

    Volume 2: Specific Physical Preparedness

    Running Time: approximately 90 minutes

Produced by Produced by Richard and Janet Merritt

Ryan Murdock, a member of the elite performance enhancement squad known as the RMAX Coaching Staff, has been studying martial arts and physical culture, including Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, for over 20 years. As a Head Coach of both Circular Strength Training® and FlowFighting® he travels around the world coaching thousands of his athletes to personal excellence. As a professional travel writer and explorer, Coach Murdock has tested his skills in some of the world’s harshest terrain: from Western China’s forbidding Taklamakan Desert to Panama’s jungly Darièn Gap. This work has taken him to 26 countries (and counting), including North Korea, Mongolia, and Nicaragua, by camel, horse, motorcycle, and dugout canoe.

I'm really happy with the material in this release. I choose to keep the production bare bones and to focus instead on cramming in 90- minutes of drills that you can put to use immediately. It moves along pretty quickly, but those who have worked the Volume 1 material should be able to keep up, and for those new to RMAX I reference other resources that will flesh out those areas.

The DVD breaks down into four sections:
    1. In the first large block we build on the movements from Volume 1. We take the GPP base that you built and sophisticate it through several variations of: screwing-arm press ups, spinal rocks, quad hops and footwork drills. Each of those blocks also includes specific compensatory movements that'll help you to clean the slate at the end of each training session.
    2. The second block presents some partner drills. This blurs the line between SPP and the martial material to be presented in Volume 3. You get a sense of how to transition between solo SPP drills to fluid SPP drills that apply friction through the aid of a training partner.
    3. The third block presents several new Prasara Body-Flow kinetic chains that I came up with to specifically target common movement hitches and areas of difficulty encountered by Budo Taijutsu practitioners.
    4. Finally, the last block - for advanced Clubbell® swingers only! - gives you a taste of how Clubbell®s can be used to RMAX Power-up your TMA. For those who have built a solid Clubbell® base, new combination routines are presented to address four specific goals: a safety valve for joint locks (Auntie Lock), striking speed (Sudden Impact), striking power (Deep Impact), and throwing power (Flight Lessons).
Anyone who trains in Budo Taijutsu (whether that be Bujinkan, Genbukan, Jinenkan,...) will benefit tremendously from this material. It's how I would focus my Attributes training, given access to the entire RMAX library, if I were still training in the Bujinkan.

For RMAX people and for those interested in TMA, I planned the series as a road map and a visual example of the theory that I presented in the RMAX Training Group Manual. My methodology was very specific, and the framework of the entire series is carefully crafted (it represents about 2 years of project development work, in addition to my years of TMA). Use this as a template for how to RMAX Power your traditional martial art background using the CST Training Hierarchy Pyramid.

Finally, a big thanks to Coach Sonnon and RMAX for making this possible, to my brothers on Staff for their inspiration, feedback and example, and to my training group (Rick, Kevin, John) for being willing guinea pigs and for contributing their ideas to the series.

He has more real life experience putting combat skills to the survival test in the most adverse nooks and cranies of the world than 10 people combined.

It only seems that way because you guys don't get out enough... Sure, I've been around a bit, but on the road I regularly encounter people who are doing far more than I am, and whose exploits humble me and fill me with awe.

    Thanks guys!

This one totally blows away Volume 1. Now that the GPP base has been built we can make things a little more challenging.

I hope to be able to order this one in the next few days. After talking to Ryan about this series before, I know that each volume builds off one another so the further you go in your practice, the more exciting the material.

I love Volume 1 for its accessibility and the way Coach Murdock clearly explains core CST-concepts in an effortless and conversational style. I'm curious to see how the excellent material off of volume 1 matures in the SPP phase.

The truth about Coach Murdock could not be farther from the truth. Coach Murdock has better stories than the rest of the Faculty Head Coaching Staff put together. One just has to pry these stories out of him. I am usually the one standing next to him with the pry-bar in hand.
    Get this DVD
In RMAX Powered Bujinkan Vol. 2, there is no pry-bar needed. This DVD will simply blow you away. It is hard to give a good review of the DVD without giving away some of the brilliance within. When I say brilliance, I mean it. This DVD could have easily been titles RMAX Movement Encyclopedia. You really get to see Coach Murdock in his element and at his best. After watching his movement, and teaching, you will never wonder why he is on the Faculty Coaching Staff of RMAX/CST. From a fan and student’s point of view this DVD is AMAZING! From a businessman’s point of view, I have to criticize my good friend and say that he gave away WAY too much. His section on Press-up and spinal rock sophistications could easily be stand alone DVDs. Coach Murdock teaches each section with precision and a natural progression that is awesome. He then shows compensatory exercises that help get you ready for each section. I watched this DVD planning to just passively watch, and ended up soaking wet from following along with his exercise progressions.
Within the Faculty Coaching Staff Coach Murdock is considered the most creative when it comes to creating exercises and exercise chains. If you are not the least bit interested in martial arts you still need this DVD, because again it is an encyclopedia of incredible, creative movement patterns.
    Things to look for
Check out the incredible strength and flexibility in Coach Murdock’s wrists and ankles. He shows exact progressions of how he developed these incredible attributes. It is truly amazing, I tried some of the movements after seeing Coach perform them, and I truly found weakness in my game. I have already started to improve since watching this DVD. Thank you Coach! Everyone, please order this DVD and back me up in forcing Coach Murdock to tell stories at the next CST. Smile

I just finished watching my copy of Coach Murdock's RMAX Powered Bujinkan. What he's accomplished with this is everything Coach Wilson said and more.

So why should you get this DVD?

First of all, everyone can benefit from the material that is presented. Regardless of style or experience there is something for everyone.

If your a Ninjutsu practitioner this thiing is a pearl.

Like most of the martial arts today there is a lack of good, solid, applicable physical conditioning to go with the technical side of the art. I don't say this to be disrespectful - but helpful. The truth is that no matter how technicaly sound an art is, if the vehicle that carries it can't stand up to the stresses of combat (as well as practice) it's all for not. Coach Murdock provides a specific (yet broad) solution to that problem.

If you have trained in, do train in, or want to train in ninjutsu (or any martial art for that matter) you need to put this tape on the shortlist of must-have training supplements.
