Looking for help with lowering Cholesterol (bad problem)

    Hello To All,

I just received a call from my doctor and I was informed that my cholesterol is over the top. I won't bore anyone with the details of the good and bad cholesterol numbers, but lets just say I've got enough "bad" cholesterol for two people and not enough of the "good" stuff for one.

My family does have a history of this and I have been given 3 months to attempt to bring it to an acceptable level. X-rays and exams have shown nothing remarkable with my heart. If I cannot bring the situation under control I may be forced to take medication to reduce the levels.

I want to avoid this at all costs. I am 37, 5' 10" and 200lbs. My Grandfather died from cholesterol and a few other things. My father had his first heart attack at age 38 and required triple bypass surgery to save his life. His second was when he was 42 and he has had his femoral arteries replaced because they were blocking up with plaque.

Does anyone have any advice on diet that may help me with this problem? Exercise is no problem, I love to do it, but I am somewhat at a loss when it comes to diet. My doctor gave me a pamphlet covering a low cholesterol regiment, but I'm not sure its the very best I could do.

Any, and I mean Any advice will be deeply appreciated!!

    Thanks,
    --ski

My cholesterol went from too much to below the radar by doing RR food.

What's your diet like right now? Probably some simple changes can make a big difference.

    Hi Connie,

    Thanks for replying!
As it stands, I have cut out eggs and lessened my dairy intake. I don't eat much fruit, but have a goodly portion of at least two different vegetables with evening dinner. Lunch, I'm sad to say, is usually something from the buffet or a fast food something-or-another. I do not eat much red meat at all because I have had a life long problem digesting it (and was told by my doctor and my fathers doctor that red meat is one of the things that exacerbates the type of cholesterol problem in my family trait).

I do have to be totally honest though, I would like to say I watch my diet well, but I know better than that. Any advice?

BTW, you referred to RR food, I'm not quite sure what that is.

    Thank you very, very much!

RR food is the food program from Potatoes not Prozac. Buy it, do it!

BTW, the most recent thinking is that the cholesterol that's bad for you is not from the cholesterol in food (eggs, dairy) but instead is the cholesterol your LIVER makes from the food you eat. And it turns out that whites (refined foods including sugar) combined with sat fats are among the worst offenders.

So, when a person does Potatoes not Prozac food, there are no more whites (after a while though - you don't cut them out until after you put the good food in).

And for someone like you with extra genetic considerations, you can also make sure your protein sources really work for you and do not harm.

BTW whey protein should be okay. It doesn't have the fats and sugars that milk has.

    It starts with breakfast:

    - a fist-sized amound of what we call "hard-core" protein - sounds like that would be chicken or fish, for you, if red meat and eggs are out - or tofu
    - a fist-sized amount of whole grain food. Salmon hash is fabulous
    - within an hour of waking

there is another forum just for learning about this way of eating.

Good luck! you are going to enjoy feeling so good, eating so well, and getting those doc phone calls gone, gone, gone.

    Good day Jeffrey,

Here is a link to an article about more recent viewpoints on cholesterol. The main focus here is that cells request cholesterol from the liver to buffer themselves from acidic ph in the body fluids, making acidosis the primary cause of high cholesterol levels.

Jeff, it looks like Connie's putting you on the right track with diet, but I'm gonna chip in and try and steer you away from the wrong one with cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Call me alarmist, but these things are getting pushed way harder than they deserve to, and can have horrendous side-effects, damaging the liver and thyroid amongst other concerns. Check out some of the articles at http://www.mercola.com/article/statins.htm

Good luck! I just found out from my sister that we apparently have a similar high cholesterol issue in our family. I'm going to the doctor in a month or two to get my numbers checked.

    Hi Ski,
You got some good advice from Connie( Potatoes not Prozak) and Conrad(Mercola's web site). Getting off refined carbs will get you where you're supposed to be on the cholesterol "scale". I believe the scale used by the Doc's have been developed by the drug makers and don't truly reflect what is or isn't a healthy condition. Stay away from the white and brown foods and proccessed foods of all kinds and shapes while maintainnig a proper exercise program.
