The Path™ - March 2006 Testimonials

"The workshop took disjointed thoughts, feelings and experiences and sorted them out into understandable form, while all along integrating movement as a form and material to re-program my re-active pattern of fear!" Deborah Ellis

"Brilliant combination of concepts. Putting psychological and physical work together this way has been very effective… could easily have been a 3-day seminar given the depth of the material. Beautiful, personal and compassionate presentation on the parts of Coach Sonnon and Steve Barns." Kyle David Jones

"Some light bulbs really went on for me today! I am eager to put into practice the tools and concepts from the Path™ seminar to better my life and the ones of those close to me." Scott Hagnas

"I loved everything… I was very impressed by both Scott and Steve’s gentleness. Their willingness to help was fantastic. I feel this workshop is truly life altering." Jeannie Johnston

"Both Scott and Steve are obviously knowledgeable at the material. However I especially appreciated seeing how genuinely concerned both instructors were about the individual attendees. I never introduced myself to Scott, but he complemented me by name. That impressed me. The RMAX material and instructors give off a good sense of feeling positive." Robert Edmonds

"I have survived stage 4 cancer, am looking at changing careers, and working to reconnect with my family. I loved the atmosphere, the people, and thoroughly enjoyed the instructors. I wish that this was a regular class and I could attend on an ongoing basis. I look forward to the next one I can attend. Thank you, Scott and Steve." Chuck Pippin

"I appreciate the instructions, the dialogue, and the commitment of the instructors is above all…" Luis A. Arranaga, CST

"For less than the cost of a dinner out, and Cirque de Soleil tickets - an all-day seminar that's fun, physically challenging, and innovative mix of life management and physical practice. I've been to many, many goal-setting seminars, and still learned here critical new information for a follow-through..." Constance C Brown, CST

"This seminar taps into how to be a human. A wonderful way to help learn your true potential." W. Wesley Buckingham

"Simply an amazing & wonderful experience!" D. Cody Fielding, CST

"Well friends I'm back from the first Path workshop and here's my review.
Executive summary: it's a winner!

I had a hard time even signing up for this. I had sworn off goal-setting workshops after having done about a dozen of them over the years, for work and church and avocations, finally settling on my favorite Covey advice to get out in nature once or twice a year for a reset on values and goals. Plus I kept snickering at flashbacks to Chris Farley and the "motivational seminars" he ran while living in his trailer down by the river.

On the other hand: Scott's material has always delighted this customer and delivered beyond my expectations, and he praised Steve's work as equally high quality. And I never, ever, saw a goal seminar that integrated physical practice. So I finally thought heck I'd spend that much for a night on the town with a nice dinner and Cirque de Soleil tickets. It has to be at least as entertaining as that plus I get a takeaway DVD of Flow-Fit.

I'm glad I took the advice to "keep an open mind" in spite of being a burnout case for goals seminars. I DID learn a few new things. And my main curiosity - how does physical practice synergize with goals - ah, I got that spark of excitement and enlightenment that's the heart and soul of a good seminar. That's it! wow, another piece of the puzzle in place.

I don't want to give away the plot for any of you who have a chance to attend one of these. We alternated with chalk-talk/lecture and then physical practice. What's new and worthwhile is the way these concepts are linked together - for example how the Hero's Journey maps to an everyday exercise session. A new way to look at that can make all the difference. And that's just one of many points of "aha" and synergy.

Maybe what delighted me the most, relative to my own background. I've gotten a lot out of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits and that model is still my favorite for values and goals. However - his 7th step he calls "sharpening the saw". That's where you take time for your physical and spiritual practice. But he never gave a physical practice, instead saying "find a good practice on your own. "

In my opinion, FlowFit™ is that practice!!! Especially in the context of what is taught during a Path seminar and how actually DOING your goals requires a heroic journey. I have no questions or doubts or wonderings or even shallow curiosity about how physical practice furthers your goals or what kind of practice will do it. Flow-Fit will.

Logistics were top-notch as usual with RMAX's Nikolay running things. You know that one where if logistics are spot on, you never notice them - that's how it was.

My fellow attendees were so welcoming and friendly. Maybe because so many were already friends from Steve's and Scott's online forums, the group vibe assembled very quickly. It was like being in your own living room with friends. I got to meet some new faces and next time, I'll make dinner plans so I can spend more time with them.

The facility was gorgeous - The Academy of Kung Fu in Portland is brand new. Also the home of Crossfit Northwest and CST's Scott Hagnas. So it was extremely comfortable and welcoming for physical fooling around during the breaks. We got to swing Clubbells™ and some of the attendees were doing monkey stuff with bars and ropes too. We talked Scott H into showing off with the Bruiser Pistol. That is something to see!

Even the lunch break was excellent. A lovely 5-block walk in the sun past flowers in bloom in the spring (tra la) to a world-class health food store for fresh food from deli or stir-fry lines and all the amazing exotically healthy and scary new things you ever wanted to try. I had a salmon patty and roasted root veg where I didn't even know what some of them were.

On the evaluation form I did spill some red ink. I would have liked more time to work on goals in writing, and also to share some for the group and get the instructors to use them as teaching moments. I thought it would be fun to write down our goals at the beginning, see what others are up to, and then again at the end to see what changed. I'd tighten up some on the chalk-talk/lecture part and give more time to participant interaction. Just your normal tweaking of a seminar to make it better.

If you have a chance to go to one of these, I recommend it 4 stars. It's way more fun and interactive and lasting than a night on the town or an overnight trip to the beach. Scott and Steve are fun to watch - excellent presentation and content."

"I've also taken a number of seminars of this type throughout the 90s. However, being a fan of Joseph Campbell, I signed up for it out of sheer curiosity how they were going to tie together goal completion with the Hero's Journey, and the relationship to a physical practice. I was quite surprised how well these things actually fit together. In fact, they go together so seamlessly that it may be fair to say that its a travesty that they're normally taught separately and left for the seeker to integrate them.

There was crossover, but for the most part, Steve did the lecture portion, and Coach Sonnon led us through the exercises and purpose of FlowFit™. Steve is an energetic, passionate, entertaining and knowledgeable presenter, offering story after story (after story!) to bring home the points he was illustrating. Several discussions and diagrams that came up (that I'm not going to list, and instead encourage you sign up!) were more than worth the price of the seminar to me.

Coach Sonnon really took the time to break down the components of FlowFit™ so that those of us with varying levels of skill remained challenged but not overwhelmed. I was grateful for this breakdown, as I was able to see multiple points where my technique needed improvement, as well as begin to learn how to do more of the advanced movements. Scott also shared many personal stories that supported Steve's material.

There is enough material that this could have easily been a two or more day seminar. However, the key to this is getting out there and doing the work yourself... setting goals in line with your values, envisioning them regularly, using physical practice (FlowFit™) to enhance your energy levels - none of this can be done for us. So I think pontificating a half day, and training half a day is a good mix.

All in all, I highly recommend this course. These two men work and play well together, and their approaches dovetail very cleanly and clearly. Well done!" Brian Bentz

"I just got back home from traveling. On Sunday Deb and I drove to the Bend area for some climbing and visiting a friend that relocated there. During those days we where in constant process, the depth of the process we underwent sometimes show’s itself in mysteries ways. I had my fear of heights come up for me. That is interesting for a climber to deal with. Deborah had various issues come up that we processed together. I still don’t feel like I have landed on the ground here.

Brief summery of the workshop: Introduction to the path. We started with a get to know your neighbor exercise. Familiar in the dance circles, weaving the thread of connection. This is great team practice as the community has to work together.

Steve is dynamic presenter, a kindred spirit that does not fear wearing his heart on his sleeve. He took us through various exercises to help us discover our nature in the relationship of the Hero’s Journey, SMART goals and our unique vision. He used tools from NLP, hypnotherapy, guided imagery and his personal anecdotes. Steve wove the three learning styles together so that everyone can hear, see, or feel the information and absorb it. One particular exercise still resonates in my core. We did a guided imagery exercise and then translated that into drawing our goals and vision with crayons. I saw myself on top of the mountain radiating love and light.

Coach Sonnon integrated Steve’s work into movement. We started with the breath. We did a progression of exercises to prepare us for the first exercise of FlowFit™, the Trinity Squat. I can still hear Coach telling the story about his daughter asking him to “do the eagle daddy, you know like this” The one thing that I find particularly important in Coach’s teaching style is his ability to break movements into there simplest component so that they can be strung together into a flowing Biomechanical Exercise™.

All through the workshop Scott and Steve wove there work together, their own personal mastery blending into the process. I know that I will be processing this for a long time to come, for this is the path." Joseph Schwartz, CST

"Many of you know first hand what a wonderful job Coach Sonnon does during his workshops & seminars –holding the intention of the process while holding our attention. What many of you may not know is what a powerful presenter Steve Barnes is – rarely have I heard someone communicate w/ so much candor. Yet the two together - sharing and caring and speaking from their fully authentic places, giving of hearts and minds – for the benefit of others carries a potency that is palpable.

We were given concepts, stories, tools and processes to aid in our own mastery, to live the lives we were meant to live. Some of the most powerful comments for me were (these are paraphrases not exact quotes).
We all have our own perfectly good reasons to be shattered, to fail, to feel sorry for ourselves, to hide, to retreat. You can have your reasons or you can have your life. Fear can be dealt w/ separate from the thing that causes the fear. Wisdom as recognition of patters. What’s worth giving up your own B.S. for?

Now or in the future, see it as a favor to yourself, the child within you, the older person you will become, your loved ones to attend one of these events. You will be changed. Rather than encouraging you to go – go if it feels right." D. Cody Fielding, CST

"On April 22nd, I attended the first Path seminar. It was an amazing experience. Coach Sonnon and Steve Barnes have given us some powerful keys to open up the world and they showed us they have confidence we can figure this out. On top of all they shared with us on Saturday, they modeled for us wonderful humans being." Bonnie York
