Selecting the winning entries to this contest (http://rmaxi.com/primalstress/?page_id=24) sounded challenging, but not an impossible task, until I began reviewing the 859 submissions. Instead of selecting entries, I found myself writing copious notes for each individual. And then realized I’d never finish in time…
Refocusing on the task, I discovered that instead of trying to select a “best” entry, as some were not in English, some were unpolished by authentic, and some were completely heartfelt stream of consciousness, that the shift needed to be made from the “best” (from a composition standpoint) to the most “needed.”
The spontaneous community which has evolved on the page impressed me the most. The very act of nearly a thousand people sharing their challenges erupted into an interactive community of support where people not even participating in the contest began to get involved. No one could have anticipated that energy spiraling upward from that outpouring. Your compassion and dedication to others, in spite of your own great challenges, humbles me with respect and admiration.
I’d love to give Primal Stress: Revive – Survive – Thrive to so many of you who entered and shared your challenges. Some of you don’t need to get it by way of this contest. You’re doing fine, and you don’t need any confidence that you can pull it off. You’ve been blessed with solid support, or you’ve allowed yourself the personal wherewithal to find resources which will address the issues you shared with me.
A few stories, however, personally resonated with me; I felt their need for external validation of their struggle. Throughout my obstacles, certain key individuals stood on the other side and threw me a rope; they could not pull me up themselves, but at least with that line, I could hope that my willpower would be sufficient to climb. But without them, it would have seemed and impossible chasm to jump.
The winners of this contest can be found below. However, I must state that I don’t like that this was a contest at all… for it implies that there were “losers.” There were NO losers, folks. Someone else would have selected different entries. I am biased by my filters, and influenced by the intent of helping those which I’ve been given the privilege of reaching. Please forgive me if you would have chosen other entries!
Entry #87. Jeff Cook: Stress can certainly exacerbate diabetes and MS. The recovery methods in the book hold a focus for helping prevent distress, but more importantly adding eustress can help you recover from symptoms as they appear and eventually resist seizures by staying under their ceiling. Add more recovery days when you intuit that you are getting close to threshold. Meticulously monitor the data in the journal templates. Over time, you’ll push the ceiling upward. Keep going, tenaciously but patiently incremental.
Entry #108. Jobe Linn: As clown entertainers for cancer wards, you and your wife are already extraordinary people, but even the strength of your humor can be overwhelmed by the gift the patients give you by sharing laughter with you. It will take faith to believe that you will have more energy by training than skipping training to rest. Remember that you’re a dynamo: train in the right way, and you’ll gain more energy to be with those wonderful people. If you can rest, move to release the energy locked within your joints.
Entry #151. Mike Paul: The fact that you can nickname your tumor in jest demonstrates that you already have the right attitude. But I fully understand needing more tools. The right type of stress can improve our health, and the wrong, diminish it. Consistency will be your most important tool. Please follow the accompanying journals with precision. If you somehow skip a day, shake it off, and begin immediately with the next day on the calendar.
Entry #383. Jim: The death of close family can certainly amplify PTSD. Although you obviously have accepted your injuries from the military and fire service, you can recuperate… and become even stronger FROM them. You have a family here, brother. The longer that you stay by dedicating to your recovery and restrengthening, the more you’ll realize how literally I mean that.
Entry #478. Gary S.: I’m very sorry for the loss of your wife. 42 years together inspires my wife and I. Financial loss can feel so overwhelmingly distressing, and though you may have the discipline to prevent the diabetes from progressing, the excessive stress can exacerbate the volatility of the symptoms. I hear you struggling right now. But I also hear how much of a fighter you are. Please accept this prize as a thank you for your military service, and as an outstretched hand for all you’re facing.
Entry #623: Debi L.: You are an incredible mother, and remind me so much of the strength of my own. Never forget the impact that you have upon others for your perseverance. Even when you feel that the situation worsens, your injuries scream in pain, and your frustrations mount, that you continue to move forward, leaves an indelible impact upon everyone, including undoubtedly, upon your children. Keep sharing your truth, especially as you allow yourself to heal and grow. You are so much more powerful than you realize, and together, we will help others through our recovery and progress.
To everyone involved, to all 859 participants, and the others who participated in the community which erupted spontaneously on the page, THANK YOU for the gift you have given me by sharing your stories. Your courageous candor both humbles me, and makes me feel honored to have read your words, and experienced the emotional intensity behind them.
Keep on fighting the good fight, brothers and sisters. I consider each of you teammates, and feel privileged to have ‘met’ you for a brief moment through your words.
